99 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville, Georgia, was founded in 1825 as the county seat of3
1010 Thomas County; and4
1111 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville is named for General Jett Thomas, who distinguished5
1212 himself as a hero of the War of 1812 and is credited with constructing the first building at the6
1313 University of Georgia; and7
1414 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Henry Ossian Flipper, the first Black graduate of the United States8
1515 Military Academy at West Point, was born into slavery in the City of Thomasville; and9
1616 WHEREAS, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy traveled to the City of Thomasville to10
1717 stay on a local plantation after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963; and11
1818 WHEREAS, General Lloyd Austin, former United States Secretary of Defense, is a12
1919 Thomasville native; and13

2222 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville was known as one of the leading winter resort locations

2424 for many of the nation's prominent families in finance, industry, and politics; and15
2525 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville remains a destination of choice for people from across16
2626 the nation and around the world who seek world-class hospitality, hunting and fishing,17
2727 dining, shopping, and cultural experiences; and18
2828 WHEREAS, the City of Thomasville is known as "The Rose City" and hosts the annual Rose19
2929 Festival.20
3030 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body21
3131 recognize March 27, 2025, as City of Thomasville Day at the state capitol.22
3232 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed23
3333 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the24
3434 press.25
