88 state capitol; and for other purposes.2
99 WHEREAS, congenital heart defects are one of the most frequently occurring birth defects3
1010 and a leading cause of deaths related to birth defects worldwide; and4
1111 WHEREAS, more than one million families across America face the challenges and5
1212 hardships of raising children with congenital heart defects, and each year, approximately6
1313 40,000 babies are born in the United States with these conditions; and7
1414 WHEREAS, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed until months or years after8
1515 birth; when these conditions go undiagnosed, they can cause many cases of sudden cardiac9
1616 death in young athletes; and10
1717 WHEREAS, despite these alarming statistics, newborns and young athletes are still not11
1818 regularly screened for congenital heart defects; and12
1919 WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week provides an opportunity for families13
2020 whose lives have been affected by congenital heart defects to celebrate life, remember the14

2323 loved ones they have lost, honor dedicated health professionals, and share information with

2525 the public and the media.16
2626 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body17
2727 recognize February 7 to 14, 2025, as Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week at the state18
2828 capitol.19
2929 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed20
3030 to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Children's21
3131 Healthcare of Atlanta and its Kids at Heart program.22
