| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, congenital heart defects are one of the most frequently occurring birth defects3 |

| 10 | 10 | | and a leading cause of deaths related to birth defects worldwide; and4 |

| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, more than one million families across America face the challenges and5 |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | hardships of raising children with congenital heart defects, and each year, approximately6 |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | 40,000 babies are born in the United States with these conditions; and7 |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed until months or years after8 |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | birth; when these conditions go undiagnosed, they can cause many cases of sudden cardiac9 |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | death in young athletes; and10 |

| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, despite these alarming statistics, newborns and young athletes are still not11 |

| 18 | 18 | | regularly screened for congenital heart defects; and12 |

| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week provides an opportunity for families13 |

| 20 | 20 | | whose lives have been affected by congenital heart defects to celebrate life, remember the14 |
