4545 WHEREAS, it is customary for the Legislature of the State of Hawaii recognize the extraordinary contributions of its citizens; and WHEREAS, Patricia Saiki's contributions to the state of Hawaii as well as the United State of America are more than worthy of such commendations; and WHEREAS, Patricia Saiki began her career teaching history in Hawaii's public and private schools for twelve years; and WHEREAS, Patricia Saiki was elected to the Hawaii State House of Representatives in 1968, where she served for six years; and WHEREAS, Patricia Saiki ran for and was elected to the State Senate in 1974; and WHEREAS, Patricia Saiki later successfully ran for U.S. Congress in 1986, where she became the first Republican woman to represent Hawaii in the House of Representatives since Mary Elizabeth Pruett Farrington in 1954 as a Territorial Delegate; and WHEREAS, while serving in Washington, D.C., Patricia Saiki convinced the George H. W. Bush administration to cease bombing operations on Kahoolawe; and WHEREAS, upon leaving Congress, Patricia Saiki was appointed as director of the Small Business Administration by President George H. W. Bush; and WHEREAS, Patricia Saiki is widely recognized and admired for mentoring prominent Hawaii Republicans such as former Governor Linda Lingle; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2023, that this body commends Patricia Saiki on the many mentioned and unmentioned lifetime contributions to the United States of America and the people of Hawaii and wishes her all the success in her future endeavors.
