4545 WHEREAS, November 28 was formally recognized in 2023 as a day of remembrance for Hawaiian Independence Day, Lā Kūʻokoʻa, within the State of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, Hawaiian Independence Day commemorates England and France's official signing of the Anglo-Franco Proclamation in 1843 which diplomatically acknowledged the Hawaiian Kingdom's independence and sovereignty; and WHEREAS, Hawaiian Independence Day is known as a day of celebration of identity and the joyful pride that comes with being a part of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, Hawaiian Independence Day recognizes aloha ʻāina that continues to grow in the people of Hawaii's naʻau due to the passion and love they have for their homeland and lands to which they feel an ancestral or spiritual connection; and WHEREAS, Hawaiian Independence Day is an important moment in the history of Hawaii and knowledge of this historic day should be perpetuated for future generations through the Department of Education's curriculum; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2024, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Education is urged to require department schools statewide to provide lessons regarding Hawaiian Independence Day, Lā Kūʻokoʻa; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Education.
