41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, the Waianae Police Station officially opened on May 20, 2016; and WHEREAS, more than sixteen million dollars were dedicated to creating the new police substation, which includes sixteen holding cells, more than sixty parking stalls, a ninety-foot radio tower, and a full-service receiving desk; and WHEREAS, while the physical structure exists, the substation is not fully functional due to unfinished infrastructure; and WHEREAS, an additional six million dollars is needed to install the necessary infrastructure for the substation to be completely operational; and WHEREAS, the substation has been underutilized for approximately ten years, and crime in West Oahu has increased; and WHEREAS, although violent crime rates on Oahu have trended downward, parts of West Oahu experienced substantial increases in homicides during 2023 and 2024; and WHEREAS, more than half of the homicides on Oahu during this period occurred in Honolulu Police Department District Eight, which includes the entirety of West Oahu, by October 2024; and WHEREAS, in response to the surge in homicides, the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu and the Honolulu Police Chief pledged additional law enforcement resources to the West Oahu area; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2025, that the City and County of Honolulu is urged to complete the construction of the Waianae Police Station; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Managing Director of the City and County of Honolulu, and Chief of the Honolulu Police Department.
