4141 WHEREAS, the Department of Education operates a single statewide public school district with fifteen regional complex areas; and WHEREAS, in the 2024-2025 academic year, 152,270 students are enrolled in two-hundred fifty-eight public schools throughout the State; and WHEREAS, the Department of Education employs approximately thirteen thousand teachers, librarians, and counselors, in addition to approximately ten thousand educational officers, civil service, and support services personnel; and WHEREAS, each year, funding for school facility upgrades and maintenance are among the most frequently requested legislative capital improvements; and WHEREAS, public schools also have a growing need for the replacement and modernization of aging school equipment; and WHEREAS, the replacement, refurbishment, and modernization of school equipment will ensure the needs of Hawaii's teachers, school staff, and students are fully met now and into the future; and WHEREAS, upgrading school equipment may increase the physical activity and mental health needs of students; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2025, that the Department of Education is requested to identify schools having aging equipment and replace the equipment with new and modernized equipment; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chairperson of the Board of Education, and Superintendent of Education.
