4343 WHEREAS, the presence of unsecured or improperly stored firearms contributes to a heightened risk of accidental injury, accidental death, and theft or loss of firearms; and WHEREAS, unsecured or improperly stored firearms significantly increase the risk of unintentional injuries and death among children; and WHEREAS, numerous states, including Hawaii, have passed or are considering the passage of secure storage laws to prevent unauthorized firearm access by children; and WHEREAS, parents and members of households with firearms should be actively updated as to any changes to gun safety requirements, including secure storage laws; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Thirty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2025, that the Department of Education is requested to provide students with information pertaining to changes to gun safety and storage laws; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Education and Superintendent of Education.
