  H.F. 898   Section 1. Section 299.2, Code 2025, is amended by adding 1   the following new subsections: 2   NEW SUBSECTION   . 7. Who is a military applicant undergoing 3   military entrance processing. 4   NEW SUBSECTION   . 8. Who is engaged in military service. 5   EXPLANATION 6   The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 7   the explanations substance by the members of the general assembly. 8   This bill modifies school attendance requirements related to 9   children who are undergoing military entrance processing or who 10   are engaged in military service. 11   Current law requires the parent, guardian, or legal or 12   actual custodian of a child who is of compulsory attendance age 13   to cause the child to attend public school or an accredited 14   nonpublic school, or place the child under competent private 15   instruction or independent private instruction, during a school 16   year. Under current law, this requirement does not apply to 17   any child who has completed the requirements for graduation in 18   an accredited school or has obtained a high school equivalency 19   diploma, who is excused for sufficient reason by any court 20   of record or judge, who is attending religious services or 21   receiving religious instructions, who is attending a private 22   college preparatory school, who has been excused under 23   Code section 299.22 (when deaf or hard-of-hearing and blind 24   children excused), or who is exempted under Code section 299.24 25   (religious groups exempted from school standards).
