1111 1 AN ACT concerning regulation.
1212 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
1313 3 represented in the General Assembly:
1414 4 Section 5. The Pharmacy Practice Act is amended by
1515 5 changing Section 17.1 as follows:

1717 7 (Section scheduled to be repealed on January 1, 2028)
1818 8 Sec. 17.1. Registered pharmacy technician training.
1919 9 (a) It shall be the joint responsibility of a pharmacy and
2020 10 its pharmacist in charge to have trained all of its registered
2121 11 pharmacy technicians or obtain proof of prior training in all
2222 12 of the following practice areas as they apply to Illinois law
2323 13 and relate to the specific practice site and job
2424 14 responsibilities:
2525 15 (1) The duties and responsibilities of the technicians
2626 16 and pharmacists.
2727 17 (2) Tasks and technical skills, policies, and
2828 18 procedures.
2929 19 (3) Compounding, packaging, labeling, and storage.
3030 20 (4) Pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
3131 21 (5) Record keeping requirements.
3232 22 (6) The ability to perform and apply arithmetic

6868 1 Beginning January 1, 2024, it shall also be the joint
6969 2 responsibility of a pharmacy and its pharmacist in charge to
7070 3 ensure that all new pharmacy technicians are educated and
7171 4 trained using a standard nationally accredited education and
7272 5 training program, such as those accredited by the
7373 6 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)/the
7474 7 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), a
7575 8 program recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification
7676 9 Board, or other board approved education and training
7777 10 programs. The pharmacist in charge is not required to provide
7878 11 the required education to the pharmacy technician, but the
7979 12 pharmacist in charge must ensure that the pharmacy technician
8080 13 has presented proof that he or she completed a standard
8181 14 nationally accredited or board approved education and training
8282 15 program.
8383 16 (b) Within 2 years of initial licensure as a pharmacy
8484 17 technician and within 6 months before beginning any new duties
8585 18 and responsibilities of a registered pharmacy technician, it
8686 19 shall be the joint responsibility of the pharmacy and the
8787 20 pharmacist in charge to train the registered pharmacy
8888 21 technician or obtain proof of prior training in the areas
8989 22 listed in subsection (a) of this Section as they relate to the
9090 23 practice site or to document that the pharmacy technician is
9191 24 making appropriate progress.
9292 25 (c) All pharmacies shall maintain an up-to-date training
9393 26 program policies and procedures manual describing the duties
