1111 1 AN ACT concerning education.
1212 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
1313 3 represented in the General Assembly:
1414 4 Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is
1515 5 amended by adding Section 65.120 as follows:
1616 6 (110 ILCS 947/65.120 new)
1717 7 Sec. 65.120. Volunteer firefighter grant program.
1818 8 (a) Subject to appropriation, the Commission shall, each
1919 9 year, receive and consider applications for grant assistance
2020 10 under this Section. An applicant is eligible for grant
2121 11 assistance if the Commission finds that the applicant:
2222 12 (1) is a resident of this State;
2323 13 (2) is a volunteer firefighter or a volunteer EMS
2424 14 personnel at the time the grant application is submitted
2525 15 to the Commission;
2626 16 (3) is a high school graduate or has received a high
2727 17 school equivalency certificate;
2828 18 (4) meets all requirements for admission to a public
2929 19 community college; and
3030 20 (5) is enrolled in an associate degree program at a
3131 21 public community college.
3232 22 (b) Applicants who are determined to be eligible for
3333 23 assistance under this Section shall receive, subject to

6868 1 appropriation, a renewable grant sufficient to pay all tuition
6969 2 and mandatory fees. The tuition and mandatory fees shall be
7070 3 paid directly to the public community college in which the
7171 4 applicant is enrolled.
7272 5 (c) A grant recipient must not have an outstanding balance
7373 6 with the public community college and must maintain
7474 7 satisfactory academic progress as determined by the community
7575 8 college to remain eligible for grant assistance.
7676 9 (d) A grant awarded under this Section may be renewed for
7777 10 up to a total of 2 years of full-time enrollment.
7878 11 (e) The Commission shall adopt any rules necessary for the
7979 12 implementation and administration of this Section.
8080 13 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
