12 | 12 | | 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |

14 | 14 | | 4 Section 5. The Higher Education Student Assistance Act is |

15 | 15 | | 5 amended by adding Section 65.120 as follows: |

17 | 17 | | 7 Sec. 65.120. Volunteer firefighter grant program. |

18 | 18 | | 8 (a) Subject to appropriation, the Commission shall, each |
---|
19 | 19 | | 9 year, receive and consider applications for grant assistance |
---|
20 | 20 | | 10 under this Section. An applicant is eligible for grant |
---|
21 | 21 | | 11 assistance if the Commission finds that the applicant: |
---|
22 | 22 | | 12 (1) is a resident of this State; |
---|
23 | 23 | | 13 (2) is a volunteer firefighter or a volunteer EMS |
---|
24 | 24 | | 14 personnel at the time the grant application is submitted |
---|
25 | 25 | | 15 to the Commission; |
---|
26 | 26 | | 16 (3) is a high school graduate or has received a high |
---|
27 | 27 | | 17 school equivalency certificate; |
---|
28 | 28 | | 18 (4) meets all requirements for admission to a public |
---|
29 | 29 | | 19 community college; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | 20 (5) is enrolled in an associate degree program at a |
---|
31 | 31 | | 21 public community college. |

32 | 32 | | 22 (b) Applicants who are determined to be eligible for |

75 | 75 | | 8 college to remain eligible for grant assistance. |

76 | 76 | | 9 (d) A grant awarded under this Section may be renewed for |

77 | 77 | | 10 up to a total of 2 years of full-time enrollment. |
---|
78 | 78 | | 11 (e) The Commission shall adopt any rules necessary for the |
---|
79 | 79 | | 12 implementation and administration of this Section. |
---|
80 | 80 | | 13 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
---|
