4	4	2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
5	5	3 Representatives wish to commemorate the historic 1974-1975 Red
6	6	4 Bud Musketeers women's volleyball team; and
7	7	5 WHEREAS, After the passage of Title IX in 1972, the
8	8	6 Musketeers had only played one season when the girls from the
9	9	7 school of 400 began their historic 37 and 1 season; and
10	10	8 WHEREAS, The Musketeer's athletic conference, the Cahokia
11	11	9 Conference, voted to forbid any women's volleyball team in the
12	12	10 conference from playing in the 1975 state tournament; and
13	13	11 WHEREAS, The Musketeers, led by their intrepid 27-year-old
14	14	12 coach, Sandy Griffin, and with the support of the local school
15	15	13 board and school administration, defied the conference and
16	16	14 entered the state tournament; and
17	17	15 WHEREAS, At the close of an undefeated 17 and 0 regular
18	18	16 season, the Musketeers destroyed the regional championship
19	19	17 field, completing the title match in a dizzying 12 minutes;
20	20	18 and
21	21	19 WHEREAS, The Musketeers relied heavily on the "Red Bud
22	22	20 Six", Diann Schrader, Deb Stamm, Paula Snyder, Cindy Guebert,

31	31	1 Meg Gross, and Kim R. Liefer, during their ensuing state
32	32	2 tournament run; and
33	33	3 WHEREAS, The Musketeers went undefeated in the sectional
34	34	4 championships and handily beat Granite City South in the
35	35	5 super-sectionals; and
36	36	6 WHEREAS, The Musketeers beat larger programs at schools
37	37	7 such as Champaign Central and Lincoln, starting their state
38	38	8 tournament bid at 24 and 0; and
39	39	9 WHEREAS, Although the team was finally eliminated by New
40	40	10 Trier East, a Chicago school boasting a roster of Olympic
41	41	11 hopefuls and a student body over 10 times larger than Red Bud,
42	42	12 the impressive run against schools of all sizes from across
43	43	13 the State sure "showed Charlie", a local sports reporter who
44	44	14 at the beginning of the season mentioned those schools with
45	45	15 Olympic hopefuls, writing "stop dreaming Red Bud"; and
46	46	16 WHEREAS, The Musketeers never stopped dreaming and, more
47	47	17 importantly, never stopped pursuing excellence on the court
48	48	18 and, in doing so, cemented their claim to the title of best
49	49	19 Southern Illinois team their sport has seen; and
50	50	20 WHEREAS, On the 25th of February, 2023, Red Bud will honor
51	51	21 the 1974-1975 Musketeers; therefore, be it

62	62	1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
63	63	2 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
64	64	3 we commemorate the 1974-1975 Red Bud Musketeers women's
65	65	4 volleyball team, acknowledging their tenacity off the court to
66	66	5 demand the right to compete at the highest level as well as
67	67	6 their grit and determination to earn that right, and thank
68	68	7 them for serving as an example of these admirable traits for
69	69	8 nearly 50 years of women competitors; and be it further
70	70	9 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
71	71	10 presented to Red Bud High School, Coach Sandy Griffin, Diann
72	72	11 Schrader, Deb Stamm, Paula Snyder, Cindy Guebert, Meg Gross,
73	73	12 and Kim R. Liefer as an expression of our respect and esteem
74	74	13 for breaking ground in sports for all young women in Southern
75	75	14 Illinois.
