44 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
55 3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
66 4 Clementina Veronica Mulholand Brown of Springfield, who passed
77 5 away on November 3, 2023; and
88 6 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown was born to Cornelius
99 7 Mulholand and Clementina "Mull" Mulholand in Ripon, California
1010 8 on December 15, 1932; she frequently worked with her father at
1111 9 the Ripon cattle auction yard, enjoyed raising animals such as
1212 10 goats, ponies, and rabbits, and belonged to her family's
1313 11 popular, award-winning mounted horseback Palomino Horse Troop;
1414 12 she graduated from Ripon High School in 1950, where she helped
1515 13 lead the debate team to achieving first place in the 1949
1616 14 statewide invitational championship; she studied nursing
1717 15 science at San Jos State University and graduated with a
1818 16 degree in nursing from O'Connor Hospital School of Nursing in
1919 17 1953; and
2020 18 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown met Lowell Jerome Brown,
2121 19 M.D. while working at Mercy Hospital in San Jose, and they were
2222 20 married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Ripon, California
2323 21 on July 21, 1962; her husband became a physician in the U.S.
2424 22 Navy, and together, they worked and lived in various Central
2525 23 and Southern California locations before settling in San Diego

3434 1 and beginning a family by adopting Neil in 1965, with Brendan
3535 2 following in 1966, Caitlin in 1968, and Terence in 1970; and
3636 3 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown and her family
3737 4 transferred to Subic Bay, the Philippines, for a two-year tour
3838 5 of duty in 1974; over the course of their stay, she and her
3939 6 husband visited India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore,
4040 7 Penang, Thailand, and Hong Kong, often bringing one or two of
4141 8 their young children with them; and
4242 9 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown settled in Springfield,
4343 10 Illinois in 1979; she and her husband built a trio of general
4444 11 practitioner medical practices, and she served as head RN of
4545 12 those offices in Springfield, Riverton, and Illiopolis; she
4646 13 concluded her medical career as chief of nurses at the
4747 14 Springfield Presbyterian Home before retiring at age 75; and
4848 15 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown continued traveling with
4949 16 her husband in retirement; they visited Ireland, England,
5050 17 Scotland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria,
5151 18 Germany, France, and Morocco, and she loved regaling listeners
5252 19 with her adventures; she enjoyed spending time with her
5353 20 beloved cats, Big Cat, Rajah, and Autumn Sunflower, and
5454 21 tending to her 1-acre yard; she was an avid reader of books and
5555 22 adored devouring her weekly issue of The New Yorker; and

6666 1 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown was an advocate for
6767 2 women's rights, special education, LGBTQ equality, and support
6868 3 for shelter animals; she will be remembered as a fiercely
6969 4 intelligent, curious, and graceful woman who lived a full and
7070 5 dignified life; and
7171 6 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown was preceded in death by
7272 7 her parents; her husband of 56 years; and her older sisters,
7373 8 Patricia Lewis, Noreen Smith, and Eileen Marcella Lowery; and
7474 9 WHEREAS, Veronica Mulholand Brown is survived by her
7575 10 children, Neil Mulholand Brown, Brendan Jerome Brown, Caitlin
7676 11 Veronica (Brown) Horton, and Terence Daley Brown; her
7777 12 daughter-in-law, Julie Refine Brown; her sisters, Sharon Groen
7878 13 and Kathleen Funke; her grandchildren, Jourdan K. Horton,
7979 14 Veronica R. Horton, Andrew J. Cline, Anna K. Brown, Neil R.
8080 15 Brown, and Clare V. Brown; her great-grandson, Archie; and
8181 16 several beloved nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
8282 17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8383 18 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8484 19 we mourn the passing of Clementina Veronica Mulholand Brown
8585 20 and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and
8686 21 all who knew and loved her; and be it further
