33 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
44 2 WHEREAS, A trisomy is a type of polysomy in which there are
55 3 three instances of a particular chromosome, instead of the
66 4 normal two; a trisomy is a type of aneuploidy, an abnormal
77 5 number of chromosomes; and
88 6 WHEREAS, Most organisms have pairs of chromosomes in each
99 7 cell, with one chromosome inherited from each parent; in such
1010 8 organisms, a process called meiosis creates cells called
1111 9 gametes that have only one set of chromosomes; and
1212 10 WHEREAS, The number of chromosomes is different for
1313 11 different species; humans have 46 chromosomes, or 23 pairs of
1414 12 chromosomes, and human gametes have only 23 chromosomes; and
1515 13 WHEREAS, If the chromosome pairs fail to separate properly
1616 14 during cell division, the egg or sperm may end up with a second
1717 15 copy of one of the chromosomes; if such a gamete results in
1818 16 fertilization and an embryo, the resulting embryo may also
1919 17 have an entire copy of the extra chromosome; and
2020 18 WHEREAS, Full trisomy, also called primary trisomy, means
2121 19 that an entire extra chromosome has been copied; partial
2222 20 trisomy means that there is an extra copy of part of a
2323 21 chromosome; secondary trisomy means the extra chromosome has

3232 1 quadruplicated arms; tertiary trisomy means the extra
3333 2 chromosome is made up of copies of arms from two other
3434 3 chromosomes; and
3535 4 WHEREAS, Trisomies can occur with any chromosome but often
3636 5 result in a miscarriage, rather than a live birth; and
3737 6 WHEREAS, Trisomy 16 is the most common trisomy in human
3838 7 pregnancies, occurring in more than one percent of
3939 8 pregnancies; and
4040 9 WHEREAS, Pregnancies in which some normal cells occur in
4141 10 addition to the trisomic cells, or mosaic trisomy 16, survive;
4242 11 this condition, however, usually results in a spontaneous
4343 12 miscarriage in the first trimester; and
4444 13 WHEREAS, The most common types of autosomal trisomy that
4545 14 survive to birth in humans are Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome),
4646 15 Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome), Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome),
4747 16 and Trisomy 8 (Warkany syndrome 2); therefore, be it
4848 17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4949 18 HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5050 19 we declare the month of March 2024 as Trisomy Awareness Month
5151 20 in the State of Illinois, and we urge all citizens of this
5252 21 State to become aware of the different types of trisomy; and be
