OFFICE OF OUTDOOR RECREATION
The legislation proposes to create a governance structure where the Governor will appoint a Director for the Office of Outdoor Recreation. This Director will oversee an Outdoor Recreation Industry Advisory Council, which will be comprised of various stakeholders focused on promoting outdoor activities and related businesses. The establishment of this office is expected to streamline efforts to support and invest in outdoor recreation, thereby aiding in the development of both rural and urban communities in Illinois. It also aims to enhance marketing and media opportunities to showcase the state’s outdoor recreational offerings.
SB3266, known as the Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry Act, aims to establish a dedicated Office within the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. This initiative is designed to recognize and enhance the significant role that outdoor recreation plays in the state's economy, particularly as it relates to job creation and tourism. According to findings presented in the bill, the outdoor recreation sector contributes substantial value to the economy, surpassing other industries and supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout the state.
Notably, there might be some challenges surrounding the allocation of resources and the prioritization of outdoor recreation relative to other state needs. Additionally, as the state of Illinois manages a limited amount of protected land, stakeholders may express concerns regarding the preservation of these areas as outdoor recreation expands. The involvement of various industries and non-profit organizations in the advisory council also raises questions about representation and priorities within the outdoor recreation economy, reflecting varying interests that must be balanced.
