44 2 WHEREAS, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic
55 3 cardiovascular disease involving thickening of the heart
66 4 muscle and can potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and
77 5 serious complications, including heart failure, atrial
88 6 fibrillation, stroke, and, in rare cases, sudden cardiac
99 7 death; and
1010 8 WHEREAS, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease
1111 9 and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity
1212 10 with a reported prevalence ranging from 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 in
1313 11 the general population; and
1414 12 WHEREAS, An estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the
1515 13 United States have HCM, yet 85% of them may remain
1616 14 undiagnosed; and
1717 15 WHEREAS, HCM shares symptoms with other common
1818 16 cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, including shortness of
1919 17 breath, chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, and fainting; this
2020 18 makes it difficult to distinguish HCM from these other
2121 19 diseases; and
2222 20 WHEREAS, All-cause mortality risk is three to four times
2323 21 higher in patients with HCM than that of the general

3333 2 WHEREAS, Knowing one's medical history and any signs and
3434 3 symptoms of HCM are important first steps in receiving an
3535 4 accurate diagnosis of HCM; and
3636 5 WHEREAS, A healthcare provider must conduct a thorough
3737 6 screening with cardiac health questions to help identify a
3838 7 risk of both genetic and congenital cardiac disorders; and
3939 8 WHEREAS, A healthcare provider may conduct several tests,
4040 9 including an echocardiogram, a cardiac MRI, or genetic
4141 10 testing, to confirm a family history of HCM and must examine
4242 11 the heart to diagnose HCM; and
4343 12 WHEREAS, Following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for
4444 13 patients to work with their healthcare provider to learn more
4545 14 about their disease and understand different management
4646 15 options, including prescription medicines and surgical
4747 16 treatment options that may help; and
4848 17 WHEREAS, The fourth Wednesday in February is an
4949 18 appropriate day to observe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
5050 19 Awareness Day; therefore, be it
5151 20 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL

6262 1 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare February
6363 2 22, 2023 as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day in the
6464 3 State of Illinois in order to raise public awareness about
6565 4 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a serious public health issue;
6666 5 and be it further
6767 6 RESOLVED, That we acknowledge the critical importance of
6868 7 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy awareness to improve
6969 8 cardiovascular health in the state and support raising
7070 9 awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed and untreated
7171 10 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and of the need to seek
7272 11 appropriate care for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; and be it
7373 12 further
7474 13 RESOLVED, That we respectfully urge the Governor to issue
7575 14 an annual proclamation recognizing the fourth Wednesday in
7676 15 February as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day and call
7777 16 upon the people of Illinois to observe the day with
7878 17 appropriate programs and activities.
