1111 1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
1212 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
1313 3 represented in the General Assembly:
1414 4 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
1515 5 Section 11-1511.5 as follows:
1616 6 (625 ILCS 5/11-1511.5 new)
1717 7 Sec. 11-1511.5. Operation of bicycle approaching a stop
1818 8 sign.
1919 9 (a) As used in this Section, "immediate hazard" means a
2020 10 vehicle approaching an intersection at a proximity and rate of
2121 11 speed sufficient to indicate to a reasonable person that there
2222 12 is a danger of collision or accident.
2323 13 (b) Except as provided in subsection (c), an individual
2424 14 operating a bicycle approaching a stop sign may proceed
2525 15 through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign if:
2626 16 (1) the individual slows to a reasonable speed; and
2727 17 (2) the individual yields the right-of-way to:
2828 18 (i) any pedestrian within the intersection or an
2929 19 adjacent crosswalk;
3030 20 (ii) other traffic within the intersection; and
3131 21 (iii) oncoming traffic that poses an immediate
3232 22 hazard during the time the individual is traveling
3333 23 through the intersection.
