11 104TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY State of Illinois 2025 and 2026 HB3035 Introduced , by Rep. Janet Yang Rohr SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED: 410 ILCS 270/20 Amends the Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer and Excessive UV Exposure in Children Act. Provides that beginning with the 2026 through 2027 school year, a school district may incorporate in its curriculum a unit in grades kindergarten through 2, 3 through 5, 6 through 8, and 9 through 12 instruction on skin cancer prevention that is provided in an age appropriate manner. Provides that for grades 6 through 12, the curriculum shall include: (1) the basic facts about skin cancer, including, but not limited to, the negative impact of human exposure to ultraviolet radiation obtained through sunburns and indoor tanning; and (2) a comprehensive set of strategies and behaviors to reduce the risk of contracting skin cancer, including, but not limited to, the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. Provides that for grades kindergarten through 5, the topics shall include the use of sunscreen and sun-protective clothing. Effective immediately. 1313 1 AN ACT concerning health.
1414 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
1515 3 represented in the General Assembly:
1616 4 Section 5. The Reducing the Risk of Skin Cancer and
1717 5 Excessive UV Exposure in Children Act is amended by changing
1818 6 Section 20 as follows:
1919 7 (410 ILCS 270/20)
2020 8 Sec. 20. Sun-safe education. Beginning with the 2026-2027
2121 9 2019-2020 school year, a school district may incorporate in
2222 10 its curriculum a unit in grades kindergarten through 2, 3
2323 11 through 5, 6 through 8, and 9 through 12 of instruction on skin
2424 12 cancer prevention that is provided in an age appropriate
2525 13 manner. For grades 6 through 12, the curriculum shall include
2626 14 all the components listed in paragraphs (1) and (2). The
2727 15 curriculum shall include and that includes, but is not limited
2828 16 to, the following components:
2929 17 (1) the basic facts about skin cancer, including, but
3030 18 not limited to, the negative impact of human exposure to
3131 19 ultraviolet radiation obtained through sunburns and indoor
3232 20 tanning; and
3333 21 (2) a comprehensive set of strategies and behaviors to
3434 22 reduce the risk of contracting skin cancer, including, but
