44 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
55 3 Representatives wish to congratulate Leyden Community High
66 4 School District 212 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary;
77 5 and
88 6 WHEREAS, Leyden Community High School District 212 serves
99 7 the residents of the Village of Franklin Park, the Village of
1010 8 Melrose Park, the City of Northlake, the Village of River
1111 9 Grove, the Village of Rosemont, the Village of Schiller Park,
1212 10 and Leyden Township; and
1313 11 WHEREAS, For nearly a century, the story of Leyden
1414 12 Community High School District 212 has been one of constant
1515 13 expansion and progress; and
1616 14 WHEREAS, In 1913, a two-year high school was started in a
1717 15 portable building, and by 1918, there were 20 students
1818 16 enrolled; and
1919 17 WHEREAS, In 1924, Leyden Community High School was
2020 18 organized as Leyden Community High School District 212, and in
2121 19 1927, a 16-room building was completed; and

3232 2 WHEREAS, In 1940, Leyden Community High School District
3333 3 212's population grew to 10,000 with 600 high school students;

3535 5 WHEREAS, In 1950, rapid post-war growth brought Leyden
3636 6 Community High School District 212's population up to 45,000
3737 7 with 1,100 high school students; and
3838 8 WHEREAS, From 1954 to 1955, over 60% of East Leyden High
3939 9 School's construction was completed; and
4040 10 WHEREAS, In 1957, West Leyden High School's construction
4141 11 began, and the school opened its doors to welcome freshmen and
4242 12 sophomore students on September 8, 1959, relieving
4343 13 overcrowding at East Leyden High School; and
4444 14 WHEREAS, In 1962, West Leyden High School celebrated its
4545 15 first graduating class; and
4646 16 WHEREAS, From 1965 to 1969, West Leyden High School housed
4747 17 Triton Junior College; and
4848 18 WHEREAS, In 1972, East Leyden High School gained a

6161 2 WHEREAS, From 1974 to 1975, Leyden Community High School
6262 3 District 212 celebrated "Fifty Years of Excellence"; and
6363 4 WHEREAS, In 1977, Leyden Community High School District
6464 5 212 won state championships in wrestling and football; and
6565 6 WHEREAS, In 1981, Leyden Community High School District
6666 7 212 combined its schools' athletic and fine arts programs; and
6767 8 WHEREAS, Leyden Community High School District 212's two
6868 9 schools enjoy the highest accreditation given by the AdvancED
6969 10 and the Educational Service Region of Cook County, and during
7070 11 the 1983-1984 school year, East Leyden High School was
7171 12 recognized as one of the State's finest high schools; and
7272 13 WHEREAS, During the 1984-1985 school year, both East
7373 14 Leyden and West Leyden High Schools were recognized by the
7474 15 U.S. Department of Education and then-U.S. President Ronald
7575 16 Reagan as Blue Ribbon Schools; and
7676 17 WHEREAS, In 2010, Leyden Community High School District
7777 18 212 achieved district accreditation status due to its
7878 19 commitment to continuous improvement and was once again
7979 20 awarded district accreditation due in part to it promoting

9393 4 WHEREAS, During the 2012-2013 school year, all Leyden
9494 5 Community High School District 212 students received a
9595 6 computer as an instructional tool to foster an environment of
9696 7 critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and
9797 8 creativity; and
9898 9 WHEREAS, In 2014, Leyden Community High School District
9999 10 212 was recognized by the College Board as the National
100100 11 Advanced Placement School of the Year; and
101101 12 WHEREAS, In 2015, Leyden Community High School District
102102 13 212 was selected as one of three school districts in the State
103103 14 of Illinois to pilot e-learning days; and
104104 15 WHEREAS, In 2016, Leyden Community High School District
105105 16 212 updated its mission and vision statement, gaining the term
106106 17 "Educate, Enrich, and Empower: Students and Communities" as
107107 18 its mission and the Board of Education's vision of "Doing
108108 19 what's best for the kids" as its motto; and
109109 20 WHEREAS, On May 18, 2017, West Leyden High School broke
110110 21 ground on its $35 million construction project, and on March

122122 2 million project to provide for additional classrooms, student
123123 3 common spaces, renovated cafeterias, and more; and
124124 4 WHEREAS, Leyden Community High School District 212's
125125 5 schools are steeped in excellence, tradition, diversity, and
126126 6 opportunity, and they currently have approximately 3,600
127127 7 students and 237 teachers, of whom 82% hold master's degrees
128128 8 or higher; and
129129 9 WHEREAS, Leyden Community High School District 212 offers
130130 10 something for every student through its wide range of gifted
131131 11 education programs, honors and advanced placement courses, and
132132 12 comprehensive vocational and career education programs; and
133133 13 WHEREAS, Leyden Community High School District 212
134134 14 students also have the opportunity to participate in 29
135135 15 interscholastic sports and over 100 clubs and activities; and
136136 16 WHEREAS, By constantly upgrading its curriculum, programs,
137137 17 resources, and supports and by working in partnership with
138138 18 students, parents, and the Leyden community, Leyden Community
139139 19 High School District 212 will continue to create a positive
140140 20 learning environment consistent with the district's mission
141141 21 statement, "Educate, Enrich, Empower: Students and
