4	4	2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
5	5	3 Representatives wish to recognize the celebration of the Lunar
6	6	4 New Year as a major holiday celebrated by Asian American
7	7	5 communities in Illinois, the United States, and around the
8	8	6 world; and
9	9	7 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the
10	10	8 year using the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar or a
11	11	9 variant; and
12	12	10 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year starts on the second new moon
13	13	11 after the winter solstice and falls between January 21 and
14	14	12 February 19 on the Gregorian calendar used in the United
15	15	13 States; and
16	16	14 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year began being celebrated in East
17	17	15 Asia and Southeast Asia more than 4,000 years ago; today, it is
18	18	16 observed worldwide among people of Bruneian, Chinese,
19	19	17 Indonesian, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and
20	20	18 Vietnamese heritage; and
21	21	19 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is known as Chinese New Year in
22	22	20 Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, Spring Festival in
23	23	21 China, Seollal in Korea, Agricultural Calendar New Year in

33	33	2 WHEREAS, While Lunar New Year celebrations vary in length
34	34	3 from culture to culture, ranging from three days to two weeks,
35	35	4 celebration commonalities include gathering with family and
36	36	5 friends, honoring ancestors and elders, watching and
37	37	6 participating in traditional dances, settling disputes,
38	38	7 exchanging gifts, and enjoying feasts; and
39	39	8 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year occurs in a 12-year cycle with
40	40	9 each year being represented by one of 12 animals from the
41	41	10 zodiac; and
42	42	11 WHEREAS, The 2025 Lunar New Year is the Year of the Snake
43	43	12 with dual symbolism representing positive and negative
44	44	13 qualities ranging from good fortune, harvest, procreation, and
45	45	14 spirituality to cunningness, evil, terror, and threats; and
46	46	15 WHEREAS, This year, the Lunar New Year will begin on
47	47	16 January 29, 2025; therefore, be it
48	48	17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
49	49	18 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
50	50	19 we recognize the cultural and historical significance of the
51	51	20 Lunar New Year to Asian American communities, express our
52	52	21 deepest respect for Asian Americans and people throughout
