44 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
55 3 Representatives wish to recognize the celebration of the Lunar
66 4 New Year as a major holiday celebrated by Asian American
77 5 communities in Illinois, the United States, and around the
88 6 world; and
99 7 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the
1010 8 year using the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar or a
1111 9 variant; and
1212 10 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year starts on the second new moon
1313 11 after the winter solstice and falls between January 21 and
1414 12 February 19 on the Gregorian calendar used in the United
1515 13 States; and
1616 14 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year began being celebrated in East
1717 15 Asia and Southeast Asia more than 4,000 years ago; today, it is
1818 16 observed worldwide among people of Bruneian, Chinese,
1919 17 Indonesian, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean, Taiwanese, and
2020 18 Vietnamese heritage; and
2121 19 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year is known as Chinese New Year in
2222 20 Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, Spring Festival in
2323 21 China, Seollal in Korea, Agricultural Calendar New Year in

3333 2 WHEREAS, While Lunar New Year celebrations vary in length
3434 3 from culture to culture, ranging from three days to two weeks,
3535 4 celebration commonalities include gathering with family and
3636 5 friends, honoring ancestors and elders, watching and
3737 6 participating in traditional dances, settling disputes,
3838 7 exchanging gifts, and enjoying feasts; and
3939 8 WHEREAS, The Lunar New Year occurs in a 12-year cycle with
4040 9 each year being represented by one of 12 animals from the
4141 10 zodiac; and
4242 11 WHEREAS, The 2025 Lunar New Year is the Year of the Snake
4343 12 with dual symbolism representing positive and negative
4444 13 qualities ranging from good fortune, harvest, procreation, and
4545 14 spirituality to cunningness, evil, terror, and threats; and
4646 15 WHEREAS, This year, the Lunar New Year will begin on
4747 16 January 29, 2025; therefore, be it
4848 17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
4949 18 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5050 19 we recognize the cultural and historical significance of the
5151 20 Lunar New Year to Asian American communities, express our
5252 21 deepest respect for Asian Americans and people throughout
