4	4	2 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex genetic
5	5	3 disorder that occurs in approximately 1 out of every 15,000
6	6	4 births and the most commonly known genetic cause of
7	7	5 life-threatening obesity; and
8	8	6 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome affects males and females
9	9	7 with equal frequency and affects all races and ethnicities;
10	10	8 and
11	11	9 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome causes an extreme and
12	12	10 insatiable appetite, often resulting in morbid obesity, which
13	13	11 is the major cause of death for individuals with the syndrome;
14	14	12 and
15	15	13 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome also causes cognitive and
16	16	14 learning disabilities as well as behavioral difficulties, such
17	17	15 as obsessive-compulsive disorder and struggles with
18	18	16 controlling emotions; and
19	19	17 WHEREAS, The hunger, metabolic, and behavioral
20	20	18 characteristics of Prader-Willi syndrome force affected
21	21	19 individuals to require constant and lifelong supervision in a
22	22	20 controlled environment; and

31	31	1 WHEREAS, Studies have shown that there is a high morbidity
32	32	2 and mortality rate for individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome;

34	34	4 WHEREAS, There is no known cure for Prader-Willi syndrome;
35	35	5 and
36	36	6 WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome allows
37	37	7 families to access treatment, intervention services, and
38	38	8 support from health professionals, advocacy organizations, and
39	39	9 other families who are dealing with the syndrome; and
40	40	10 WHEREAS, Recently discovered treatments, such as human
41	41	11 growth hormone, are improving the quality of life for
42	42	12 individuals with the syndrome and offer new hope to families,
43	43	13 but many difficult symptoms associated with Prader-Willi
44	44	14 syndrome remain untreated; and
45	45	15 WHEREAS, Increased research into Prader-Willi syndrome can
46	46	16 lead to a better understanding of the disorder, more effective
47	47	17 treatments, and an eventual cure for Prader-Willi syndrome;
48	48	18 and
49	49	19 WHEREAS, Increased research into Prader-Willi syndrome is
50	50	20 likely to improve our understanding of common public health
51	51	21 concerns, including childhood obesity and mental health; and

62	62	1 WHEREAS, Advocacy organizations have designated May as
63	63	2 National Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month; therefore, be
64	64	3 it
65	65	4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
66	66	5 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
67	67	6 we declare May 2025 as Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month
68	68	7 in the State of Illinois; and be it further
69	69	8 RESOLVED, That we express our support for raising
70	70	9 awareness and educating the public about Prader-Willi Syndrome
71	71	10 and increasing research and funding into the causes and
72	72	11 treatments of the disease.
