44 2 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome is a complex genetic
55 3 disorder that occurs in approximately 1 out of every 15,000
66 4 births and the most commonly known genetic cause of
77 5 life-threatening obesity; and
88 6 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome affects males and females
99 7 with equal frequency and affects all races and ethnicities;

1111 9 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome causes an extreme and
1212 10 insatiable appetite, often resulting in morbid obesity, which
1313 11 is the major cause of death for individuals with the syndrome;

1515 13 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi syndrome also causes cognitive and
1616 14 learning disabilities as well as behavioral difficulties, such
1717 15 as obsessive-compulsive disorder and struggles with
1818 16 controlling emotions; and
1919 17 WHEREAS, The hunger, metabolic, and behavioral
2020 18 characteristics of Prader-Willi syndrome force affected
2121 19 individuals to require constant and lifelong supervision in a

3131 1 WHEREAS, Studies have shown that there is a high morbidity
3232 2 and mortality rate for individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome;

3434 4 WHEREAS, There is no known cure for Prader-Willi syndrome;

3636 6 WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome allows
3737 7 families to access treatment, intervention services, and
3838 8 support from health professionals, advocacy organizations, and
3939 9 other families who are dealing with the syndrome; and
4040 10 WHEREAS, Recently discovered treatments, such as human
4141 11 growth hormone, are improving the quality of life for
4242 12 individuals with the syndrome and offer new hope to families,
4343 13 but many difficult symptoms associated with Prader-Willi
4444 14 syndrome remain untreated; and
4545 15 WHEREAS, Increased research into Prader-Willi syndrome can
4646 16 lead to a better understanding of the disorder, more effective
4747 17 treatments, and an eventual cure for Prader-Willi syndrome;
4848 18 and
4949 19 WHEREAS, Increased research into Prader-Willi syndrome is
5050 20 likely to improve our understanding of common public health

6565 4 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6666 5 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6767 6 we declare May 2025 as Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month
6868 7 in the State of Illinois; and be it further
6969 8 RESOLVED, That we express our support for raising
7070 9 awareness and educating the public about Prader-Willi Syndrome
7171 10 and increasing research and funding into the causes and
7272 11 treatments of the disease.
