1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, To achieve freedom in Vietnam, 58,000 American
3 servicemen and nearly 250,000 Vietnamese sacrificed their
4 lives; and
5 WHEREAS, The former Republic of Vietnam flag design was
6 incorporated in the Vietnam Service Medal created by President
7 Lyndon Johnson; and
8 WHEREAS, The hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese who have
9 resettled in the United States have made positive
10 contributions to the historical, cultural, educational, and
11 economic prosperity of their local communities; and
12 WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans remain vigilant in opposing
13 tyranny of all forms, actively supporting human rights for all
14 people and celebrating the principles of democracy, justice,
15 and tolerance; and
16 WHEREAS, The flag of the former Republic of Vietnam, with
17 three red stripes upon a field of gold, symbolizes the
18 resilience, freedom, and democracy of Vietnamese Americans in
19 the United States; and
20 WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans in the United States embrace

1 the flag as a uniting symbol; and
2 WHEREAS, The flag of the former Republic of Vietnam has
3 been formally recognized by 20 states, 15 counties, and 85
4 cities; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
6 HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we recognize the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam as the
8 official symbol of the Vietnamese American community in the
9 State of Illinois and the United States; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That we recognize the flag of the former
11 Republic of Vietnam as a symbol of hope, love, and freedom for
12 the Vietnamese American community in Illinois; and be it
13 further
14 RESOLVED, That we honor the contributions of Vietnamese
15 Americans to the State over the last 50 years; and be it
16 further
17 RESOLVED, That we honor and recognize the contributions of
18 the veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces who served in Vietnam;
19 and be it further
20 RESOLVED, That we encourage all citizens of Illinois to
