1  HOUSE RESOLUTION
2  WHEREAS, Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as
3  chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), is a complex, debilitating
4  neurological and immunological disease that affects millions
5  worldwide, including an estimated two to three million people
6  in the United States; and
7  WHEREAS, ME/CFS is characterized by profound fatigue,
8  post-exertional malaise, a worsening of symptoms after even
9  minor exertion, cognitive impairment "brain fog", chronic
10  pain, immune dysfunction, dizziness, and a range of other
11  disabling symptoms that significantly reduce quality of life;
12  and
13  WHEREAS, ME/CFS can affect individuals of all ages,
14  genders, and backgrounds, often leaving patients bedridden or
15  housebound for years or even a lifetime, with only a small
16  percentage achieving full recovery; and
17  WHEREAS, Scientific research has demonstrated that ME/CFS
18  is a serious, multi-system disease, yet it remains
19  underfunded, under-researched, and widely misunderstood,
20  contributing to significant delays in diagnosis, limited
21  treatment options, and ongoing stigma for patients; and

1  WHEREAS, Over 65 million people worldwide, including those
2  suffering from long COVID and other post-viral conditions, now
3  face similar challenges, highlighting the urgent need for
4  increased biomedical research, healthcare provider education,
5  and public awareness of infection-associated chronic
6  conditions; and
7  WHEREAS, The economic impact of ME/CFS in the U.S. alone
8  is estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars
9  annually due to lost productivity, medical costs, and the need
10  for full-time caregiving; and
11  WHEREAS, Recognizing ME/CFS and related conditions as
12  serious public health concerns will help accelerate research
13  funding, improve clinical care, and promote policies that
14  support affected individuals and their families; therefore, be
15  it
16  RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17  HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18  we declare May 12, 2025 as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic
19  Fatigue Syndrome Awareness Day in the State of Illinois in
20  recognition of the millions of people living with ME/CFS and
21  related post-infectious diseases; and be it further
