1111 1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
1212 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
1313 3 represented in the General Assembly:
1414 4 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
1515 5 changing Section 12-201 as follows:
1616 6 (625 ILCS 5/12-201) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-201)
1717 7 Sec. 12-201. When lighted lamps are required.
1818 8 (a) When operated upon any highway in this State, every
1919 9 motorcycle shall at all times exhibit at least one lighted
2020 10 lamp, showing a white light visible for at least 500 feet in
2121 11 the direction the motorcycle is proceeding. However, in lieu
2222 12 of such lighted lamp, a motorcycle may be equipped with and use
2323 13 a means of modulating the upper beam of the head lamp between
2424 14 high and a lower brightness. No such head lamp shall be
2525 15 modulated, except to otherwise comply with this Code, during
2626 16 times when lighted lamps are required for other motor
2727 17 vehicles.
2828 18 (b) All other motor vehicles shall exhibit at least 2
2929 19 lighted head lamps, with at least one on each side of the
3030 20 frontmost of the vehicle, which satisfy United States
3131 21 Department of Transportation requirements, as set forth in 49
3232 22 CFR 571.108, showing white lights, including that emitted by
3333 23 high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, or lights of a yellow or

6868 1 amber tint, during the period from sunset to sunrise, at times
6969 2 when rain, snow, fog, or other atmospheric conditions require
7070 3 the use of windshield wipers, and at any other times when, due
7171 4 to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions,
7272 5 persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly
7373 6 discernible at a distance of 1000 feet. Parking lamps may be
7474 7 used in addition to but not in lieu of such head lamps. Every
7575 8 motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer shall also exhibit at
7676 9 least 2 lighted lamps, commonly known as tail lamps, which
7777 10 shall be mounted on the left rearmost and right rearmost of the
7878 11 vehicle so as to throw a red light visible for at least 500
7979 12 feet in the reverse direction, except that a truck tractor or
8080 13 road tractor manufactured before January 1, 1968 and all
8181 14 motorcycles need be equipped with only one such tail lamp.
8282 15 (c) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so
8383 16 constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light a
8484 17 rear registration plate when required and render it clearly
8585 18 legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. Any tail lamp
8686 19 or tail lamps, together with any separate lamp or lamps for
8787 20 illuminating a rear registration plate, shall be so wired as
8888 21 to be lighted whenever the head lamps or auxiliary driving
8989 22 lamps are lighted.
9090 23 (d) A person shall install only head lamps that satisfy
9191 24 United States Department of Transportation regulations, as set
9292 25 forth in 49 CFR 571.108, and show white light, including that
9393 26 emitted by HID lamps, or light of a yellow or amber tint for
