11	11	1 AN ACT concerning transportation.
12	12	2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
13	13	3 represented in the General Assembly:
14	14	4 Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by
15	15	5 changing Section 12-201 as follows:
16	16	6 (625 ILCS 5/12-201) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-201)
17	17	7 Sec. 12-201. When lighted lamps are required.
18	18	8 (a) When operated upon any highway in this State, every
19	19	9 motorcycle shall at all times exhibit at least one lighted
20	20	10 lamp, showing a white light visible for at least 500 feet in
21	21	11 the direction the motorcycle is proceeding. However, in lieu
22	22	12 of such lighted lamp, a motorcycle may be equipped with and use
23	23	13 a means of modulating the upper beam of the head lamp between
24	24	14 high and a lower brightness. No such head lamp shall be
25	25	15 modulated, except to otherwise comply with this Code, during
26	26	16 times when lighted lamps are required for other motor
27	27	17 vehicles.
28	28	18 (b) All other motor vehicles shall exhibit at least 2
29	29	19 lighted head lamps, with at least one on each side of the
30	30	20 frontmost of the vehicle, which satisfy United States
31	31	21 Department of Transportation requirements, as set forth in 49
32	32	22 CFR 571.108, showing white lights, including that emitted by
33	33	23 high intensity discharge (HID) lamps, or lights of a yellow or

68	68	1 amber tint, during the period from sunset to sunrise, at times
69	69	2 when rain, snow, fog, or other atmospheric conditions require
70	70	3 the use of windshield wipers, and at any other times when, due
71	71	4 to insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions,
72	72	5 persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly
73	73	6 discernible at a distance of 1000 feet. Parking lamps may be
74	74	7 used in addition to but not in lieu of such head lamps. Every
75	75	8 motor vehicle, trailer, or semi-trailer shall also exhibit at
76	76	9 least 2 lighted lamps, commonly known as tail lamps, which
77	77	10 shall be mounted on the left rearmost and right rearmost of the
78	78	11 vehicle so as to throw a red light visible for at least 500
79	79	12 feet in the reverse direction, except that a truck tractor or
80	80	13 road tractor manufactured before January 1, 1968 and all
81	81	14 motorcycles need be equipped with only one such tail lamp.
82	82	15 (c) Either a tail lamp or a separate lamp shall be so
83	83	16 constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light a
84	84	17 rear registration plate when required and render it clearly
85	85	18 legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. Any tail lamp
86	86	19 or tail lamps, together with any separate lamp or lamps for
87	87	20 illuminating a rear registration plate, shall be so wired as
88	88	21 to be lighted whenever the head lamps or auxiliary driving
89	89	22 lamps are lighted.
90	90	23 (d) A person shall install only head lamps that satisfy
91	91	24 United States Department of Transportation regulations, as set
92	92	25 forth in 49 CFR 571.108, and show white light, including that
93	93	26 emitted by HID lamps, or light of a yellow or amber tint for
