| 18 | 18 | | 8 (a) The Secretary, upon the receipt of a request from a |

| 19 | 19 | | 9 municipality or fire protection district that operates a fire |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 10 department accompanied by an application and the appropriate |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 11 fee, may issue, to a volunteer firefighter of each municipal |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 12 fire department or fire protection district, special |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 13 registration plates designated as volunteer firefighter |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 14 license plates. The special plates issued under this Section |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | 15 shall be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 16 division or motor vehicles of the second division weighing not |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | 17 more than 8,000 pounds that are owned by the fire department or |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | 18 a volunteer firefighter of the fire department. Plates issued |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | 19 under this Section shall expire according to the multi-year |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | 20 procedure established by Section 3-414.1. |

| 31 | 31 | | 21 (b) The design and color of the special plates shall be |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | 22 wholly within the discretion of the Secretary. The plates are |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | 23 not required to designate "Land of Lincoln" as prescribed in |
