44 2 WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of
55 3 death in women, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer
66 4 combined, and yet only 44% of women recognize that
77 5 cardiovascular disease is the greatest health threat they
88 6 face; and
99 7 WHEREAS, Among females aged 20 and older, nearly 45% are
1010 8 living with some form of cardiovascular disease, and less than
1111 9 half of women entering pregnancy in the United States have
1212 10 optimal cardiovascular health; and
1313 11 WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of
1414 12 maternal death in the U.S.; more simply put, heart disease is
1515 13 the number one killer of new mothers; and
1616 14 WHEREAS, Overall, 10% to 20% of women will have a health
1717 15 issue during pregnancy, and high blood pressure, preeclampsia,
1818 16 and gestational diabetes during pregnancy greatly increase a
1919 17 women's risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in
2020 18 life; and
2121 19 WHEREAS, Most cardiac and stroke events can be prevented
2222 20 through education and lifestyle changes, including moving
2323 21 more, eating smart, and managing blood pressure; and

3232 1 WHEREAS, In 2020, strokes caused the deaths of 90,627
3333 2 females, accounting for approximately 56.5% of total stroke
3434 3 deaths; and
3535 4 WHEREAS, Women are often less likely to receive bystander
3636 5 CPR because rescuers may fear accusations of inappropriate
3737 6 touching, sexual assault, or injuring the victim; and
3838 7 WHEREAS, There are significant biological differences
3939 8 between men and women, and clinical trials have not always
4040 9 adequately enrolled women or analyzed sex-specific differences
4141 10 in the data; as of 2020, only 38% of cardiovascular clinical
4242 11 research trial participants are women; and
4343 12 WHEREAS, By increasing awareness, speaking out about heart
4444 13 disease, and empowering women to reduce their risk for
4545 14 cardiovascular disease, we can save thousands of lives each
4646 15 year; and
4747 16 WHEREAS, Since 2004, the American Heart Association's Go
4848 17 Red for Women movement has addressed the awareness and
4949 18 clinical care gaps of cardiovascular disease, women's greatest
5050 19 health threat, and continues to make bold moves to save lives
5151 20 and pioneer scientific discoveries; therefore, be it
