4 | 4 | | 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |

5 | 5 | | 3 to learn of the death of Fred Palin of Cuba, who passed away on |

6 | 6 | | 4 January 13, 2025; and |

7 | 7 | | 5 WHEREAS, Fred Palin was born to Frederick T. Palin and |
---|
8 | 8 | | 6 Laura Tenant Palin in Cuba on February 6, 1933; after |
---|
9 | 9 | | 7 graduating from Cuba schools, he attended Northwestern |
---|
10 | 10 | | 8 University and Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma; |
---|
11 | 11 | | 9 following his service in the U.S. Army, he attended Michigan |
---|
12 | 12 | | 10 State University; he married Ruth Ann McDonald on August 14, |
---|
13 | 13 | | 11 1953, and she preceded him in death in 2011; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | 12 WHEREAS, Fred Palin worked with his father to reorganize |
---|
15 | 15 | | 13 the Day & Palin grocery stores in Fulton and Mason Counties in |
---|
16 | 16 | | 14 the mid-1950s; after purchasing the business from his father, |
---|
17 | 17 | | 15 he operated grocery stores in Cuba, Lewistown, Havana, and |
---|
18 | 18 | | 16 Farmington for over 40 years; after selling the grocery |
---|
19 | 19 | | 17 stores, he created a general merchandise and eBay store that |
---|
20 | 20 | | 18 continues to operate; his passion for retailing was his way of |
---|
21 | 21 | | 19 making a creative contribution to the community; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | 20 WHEREAS, Fred Palin was actively involved in the |
---|
23 | 23 | | 21 Independent Grocers Association (IGA), the Cuba Christian |
---|
24 | 24 | | 22 Church, and the Fulton County Community Concert Association |
---|
