44 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
55 3 to learn of the death of Fred Palin of Cuba, who passed away on
66 4 January 13, 2025; and
77 5 WHEREAS, Fred Palin was born to Frederick T. Palin and
88 6 Laura Tenant Palin in Cuba on February 6, 1933; after
99 7 graduating from Cuba schools, he attended Northwestern
1010 8 University and Central State College in Edmond, Oklahoma;
1111 9 following his service in the U.S. Army, he attended Michigan
1212 10 State University; he married Ruth Ann McDonald on August 14,
1313 11 1953, and she preceded him in death in 2011; and
1414 12 WHEREAS, Fred Palin worked with his father to reorganize
1515 13 the Day & Palin grocery stores in Fulton and Mason Counties in
1616 14 the mid-1950s; after purchasing the business from his father,
1717 15 he operated grocery stores in Cuba, Lewistown, Havana, and
1818 16 Farmington for over 40 years; after selling the grocery
1919 17 stores, he created a general merchandise and eBay store that
2020 18 continues to operate; his passion for retailing was his way of
2121 19 making a creative contribution to the community; and
2222 20 WHEREAS, Fred Palin was actively involved in the
2323 21 Independent Grocers Association (IGA), the Cuba Christian
2424 22 Church, and the Fulton County Community Concert Association

3333 1 over the years; he also loved big band and classical music; and
3434 2 WHEREAS, Fred Palin is survived by his children, Philip
3535 3 Jon (Jeannie) and Jana Lea; three grandchildren; his nieces,
3636 4 Amy Sabol and Mary Nelmes; and his niece-in-law, Jan (the late
3737 5 James Joseph) Nelmes; therefore, be it
3838 6 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
3939 7 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4040 8 Fred Palin and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
4141 9 friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
4242 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4343 11 presented to the family of Fred Palin as an expression of our
4444 12 deepest sympathy.
