44 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
55 3 to learn of the death of Blanca Delia Hernandez of Chicago, who
66 4 passed away on February 12, 2025; and
77 5 WHEREAS, Blanca Hernandez was born in Morovis, Puerto
88 6 Rico, and she was raised in Jayuya; at the age of 22, she moved
99 7 to Chicago, where she met her husband, Gilberto Hernandez, and
1010 8 they settled in the Lincoln Park neighborhood; she was a
1111 9 resident of Chicago for 73 years; and
1212 10 WHEREAS, Blanca Hernandez worked as an educator for
1313 11 Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for 24 years and served as a stout
1414 12 advocate for education in the Latino community; alongside her
1515 13 husband and siblings, she also helped establish the first
1616 14 financial institution to serve Latinos in Chicago, the
1717 15 Caballeros de San Juan Credit Union; and
1818 16 WHEREAS, Blanca Hernandez was a dedicated member of St.
1919 17 Michael's Parish, where she established the first Spanish Mass
2020 18 to provide Puerto Ricans with a home base in the community;
2121 19 after she and her family later moved to St. Sylvester Parish,
2222 20 she volunteered for many activities, including as a teacher in
2323 21 the church's Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD)

3333 1 WHEREAS, Blanca Hernandez was a force to be reckoned with
3434 2 and an exemplary mother; she was known for her strength and
3535 3 determination to persevere through any obstacle, overcoming
3636 4 any challenge by utilizing her wisdom, patience, and faith;
3737 5 and
3838 6 WHEREAS, Blanca Hernandez was preceded in death by her
3939 7 husband of 27 years, Gilberto; and
4040 8 WHEREAS, Blanca Hernandez is survived by her children,
4141 9 Tati (Michael) Needleman, Quitty (James) Hernandez, Ana Maria
4242 10 (Francisco) Accove, Gilberto (Yolanda) Hernandez II, Marta
4343 11 Hernandez, Orlando (the late Darlene) Hernandez, and Susana
4444 12 (Dave) Sheeran; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren;

4646 14 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
4747 15 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4848 16 Blanca Delia Hernandez and extend our sincere condolences to
4949 17 her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it

5151 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5252 20 presented to the family of Blanca Hernandez as an expression
5353 21 of our deepest sympathy.
