*HR1534* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Johnson, Schaibley ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing the Junior League 2 of Indianapolis in celebration of its centennial year. 3 Whereas, The Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) held its 4 first general meeting in 1922 and incorporated in 1924. JLI has 5 spearheaded countless community service initiatives, starting 6 with the founding of the Occupational Therapy department at 7 Riley Hospital for Children. JLI has been fundraising for over 8 75 years through a second hand shop known as the Next to New 9 Shop and making spirits bright with Holiday Mart, well 10 established for 50 years; 11 Whereas, The League has provided educational 12 programming and resources for the children of Indianapolis 13 through music, art, history, theater, healthy eating, and 14 multiple literacy programs. It has created inclusivity for 15 children with deficits in vision, hearing, and learning, for those 20222545 HR 1534/DI 140 2022 2 1 in the juvenile justice system, and by supporting community 2 centers that provide child care, medical care, or social 3 services; 4 Whereas, The League has also rallied around the city of 5 Indianapolis with historical preservation projects and 6 establishing Indianapolis as a leading host city for more than 7 a dozen sporting events; 8 Whereas, The mission of the League has evolved from its 9 inception to reflect an ever-changing society, and with that 10 Junior League women have emerged as civic leaders. Since the 11 founding of the League and over several decades, the 12 membership consisted of homemakers who met on weekday 13 mornings. Today, members are balancing careers and family 14 with meetings after work. Each and every member values 15 meeting the needs of her community through volunteerism; and 16 Whereas, In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Junior 17 League of Indianapolis has made a significant social and 18 economic impact in the Indianapolis community since its 19 beginning in 1922. JLI has donated $11 million to various 20 community partners since 1922, with $4.9 million of those 21 donations occurring since 2000. JLI has also sponsored nearly 22 170 community projects to benefit the Indianapolis community 23 and contributed thousands of volunteer hours each year to 24 organizations in the community: Therefore, 25 Be it resolved by the Indiana House of Representatives of the 26 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 27 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives 28 recognizes the Junior League of Indianapolis in celebration of 29 its centennial year. 30 SECTION 2.
