Synopsis:  Highway safety. Defines a cable-barrier system. Defines a
median. Requires the department of transportation to place a
cable-barrier system in a median that is not more than 65 feet wide
along a highway.
Effective:  July 1, 2022.

SENATE BILL No. 201
A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
transportation.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1 SECTION 1. IC 8-23-1-14.2 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
2 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
3 1, 2022]: Sec. 14.2. "Cable-barrier system" means a flexible median
4 barrier with a larger lateral deflection during a vehicle impact.
5 SECTION 2. IC 8-23-1-30.5 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
6 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
7 1, 2022]: Sec. 30.5. "Median" means the portion of a divided
8 highway separating the traveled way for traffic proceeding in
9 opposite directions.
10 SECTION 3. IC 8-23-4-13 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
11 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
12 1, 2022]: Sec. 13. (a) The department shall place a cable-barrier
13 system in a median that is not more than sixty-five (65) feet wide
14 along a highway.
15 (b) The department shall adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to
16 implement this section.
