1212 SENATE CONCURRENT
1313 RESOLUTION No. _____
1414 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging Governor
1515 2 Holcomb to proclaim the week of May 1, 2022, as Tardive
1616 3 Dyskinesia Awareness Week.
1717 4 Whereas, Many people with serious, chronic mental illness,
1818 5 such as schizophrenia, or gastrointestinal disorders, including
1919 6 gastroparesis, require treatment with medications that work as
2020 7 dopamine receptor blocking agents (DRBAs);
2121 8 Whereas, While DRBAs have important, even lifesaving,
2222 9 therapeutic value for many patients, the same drugs can also
2323 10 lead to tardive dyskinesia;
2424 11 Whereas, Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder that
2525 12 is characterized by random, involuntary, and uncontrolled
2626 13 movements of different muscles in the face, trunk, and
2727 14 extremities;
2828 15 Whereas, In some people, tardive dyskinesia can develop
2929 16 months, years, or decades after prolonged use of DRBAs and
3030 17 can continue even after the person stops taking the drug;
3131 18 Whereas, It is estimated that over 600,000 Americans suffer
3232 19 from tardive dyskinesia;
3333 20 Whereas, Years of difficult and challenging research have
3434 21 resulted in recent scientific breakthroughs, with two new
3535 22 treatments for tardive dyskinesia being approved by the United
3636 23 States Food and Drug Administration;
3737 2022 RC 1506/DI ZS 2
3838 1 Whereas, Because tardive dyskinesia is often unrecognized
3939 2 or improperly diagnosed, regular screening for tardive
4040 3 dyskinesia in patients taking DRBA medications is
4141 4 recommended by the American Psychiatric Association; and
4242 5 Whereas, The General Assembly and Governor Holcomb
4343 6 can help raise awareness of tardive dyskinesia in the public and
4444 7 medical community: Therefore,
4545 8 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
4646 9 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
4747 10 concurring:
4848 11
4949 12 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges
5050 13 Governor Holcomb to proclaim the week of May 1, 2022, as
5151 14 Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week.
5252 15 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
5353 16 to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Holcomb.
