12 | 12 | | SENATE CONCURRENT |
---|
13 | 13 | | RESOLUTION No. _____ |
---|
14 | 14 | | 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging Governor |
---|
15 | 15 | | 2 Holcomb to proclaim the week of May 1, 2022, as Tardive |
---|
16 | 16 | | 3 Dyskinesia Awareness Week. |
---|
17 | 17 | | 4 Whereas, Many people with serious, chronic mental illness, |
---|
18 | 18 | | 5 such as schizophrenia, or gastrointestinal disorders, including |
---|
19 | 19 | | 6 gastroparesis, require treatment with medications that work as |
---|
20 | 20 | | 7 dopamine receptor blocking agents (DRBAs); |
---|
21 | 21 | | 8 Whereas, While DRBAs have important, even lifesaving, |
---|
22 | 22 | | 9 therapeutic value for many patients, the same drugs can also |
---|
23 | 23 | | 10 lead to tardive dyskinesia; |
---|
24 | 24 | | 11 Whereas, Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder that |
---|
25 | 25 | | 12 is characterized by random, involuntary, and uncontrolled |
---|
26 | 26 | | 13 movements of different muscles in the face, trunk, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | 14 extremities; |
---|
28 | 28 | | 15 Whereas, In some people, tardive dyskinesia can develop |
---|
29 | 29 | | 16 months, years, or decades after prolonged use of DRBAs and |
---|
30 | 30 | | 17 can continue even after the person stops taking the drug; |
---|
31 | 31 | | 18 Whereas, It is estimated that over 600,000 Americans suffer |
---|
32 | 32 | | 19 from tardive dyskinesia; |
---|
33 | 33 | | 20 Whereas, Years of difficult and challenging research have |
---|
34 | 34 | | 21 resulted in recent scientific breakthroughs, with two new |
---|
35 | 35 | | 22 treatments for tardive dyskinesia being approved by the United |
---|
36 | 36 | | 23 States Food and Drug Administration; |
---|
37 | 37 | | 2022 RC 1506/DI ZS 2 |
---|
38 | 38 | | 1 Whereas, Because tardive dyskinesia is often unrecognized |
---|
39 | 39 | | 2 or improperly diagnosed, regular screening for tardive |
---|
40 | 40 | | 3 dyskinesia in patients taking DRBA medications is |
---|
41 | 41 | | 4 recommended by the American Psychiatric Association; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | 5 Whereas, The General Assembly and Governor Holcomb |
---|
43 | 43 | | 6 can help raise awareness of tardive dyskinesia in the public and |
---|
44 | 44 | | 7 medical community: Therefore, |
---|
45 | 45 | | 8 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly |
---|
46 | 46 | | 9 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives |
---|
47 | 47 | | 10 concurring: |
---|
48 | 48 | | 11 |
---|
49 | 49 | | 12 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges |
---|
50 | 50 | | 13 Governor Holcomb to proclaim the week of May 1, 2022, as |
---|
51 | 51 | | 14 Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week. |
---|
52 | 52 | | 15 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed |
---|
53 | 53 | | 16 to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Holcomb. |
