1515 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Alpha Kappa
1616 2 Alpha Sorority, Inc.
1717 3 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded on
1818 4 January 15, 1908, with a mission to promote unity and
1919 5 friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate
2020 6 problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their
2121 7 social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life,
2222 8 and to be of "Service to All Mankind";
2323 9 Whereas, In 1915, the sorority hosted its first political action
2424 10 conference with Illinois Congressman and human rights activist
2525 11 Martin B. Madden;
2626 12 Whereas, Through the years, the sorority's function has
2727 13 become more complex, branching out to engage members
2828 14 worldwide in advocacy and service projects and to improve
2929 15 socioeconomic, racial, political, and environmental conditions;
3030 16 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha's diverse, collaborative work
3131 17 throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa,
3232 18 and the United Arab Emirates integrates a high level of
3333 19 personal engagement with the strong bonds of sisterhood and
3434 20 a productive network of community partners;
3535 21 Whereas, On March 7, 2023, Indiana members of Alpha
3636 22 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., participated in "AKA Day at the
3737 23 Capitol" at the Indiana Statehouse;
3838 24 Whereas, The annual event is an opportunity for members to
3939 25 speak with local lawmakers, engage in workshops, and

4141 1 advocate for critical issues such as Black maternal health,
4242 2 suicide prevention, and other important issues affecting the
4343 3 Black community;
4444 4 Whereas, Indiana is home to 20 Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters,
4545 5 eight of which are located on college and university campuses,
4646 6 and has 12 active alumnae groups in communities throughout
4747 7 the state;
4848 8 Whereas, The central region of the United States is home to
4949 9 95 empowered and engaged chapters serving Illinois, Indiana,
5050 10 Kentucky, Minnesota, southeastern Missouri, and Wisconsin;
5151 11 and
5252 12 Whereas, There are two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
5353 13 currently serving in the Indiana Legislature: Therefore,
5454 14 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5555 15 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
5656 16 the Senate concurring:
5757 17 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
5858 18 March 7, 2023, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Day at the
5959 19 Capitol in the state of Indiana.
6060 20 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
6161 21 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
6262 22 Representative Vanessa Summers for distribution.
