15	15	1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Alpha Kappa
16	16	2 Alpha Sorority, Inc.
17	17	3 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded on
18	18	4 January 15, 1908, with a mission to promote unity and
19	19	5 friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate
20	20	6 problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their
21	21	7 social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life,
22	22	8 and to be of "Service to All Mankind";
23	23	9 Whereas, In 1915, the sorority hosted its first political action
24	24	10 conference with Illinois Congressman and human rights activist
25	25	11 Martin B. Madden;
26	26	12 Whereas, Through the years, the sorority's function has
27	27	13 become more complex, branching out to engage members
28	28	14 worldwide in advocacy and service projects and to improve
29	29	15 socioeconomic, racial, political, and environmental conditions;
30	30	16 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha's diverse, collaborative work
31	31	17 throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa,
32	32	18 and the United Arab Emirates integrates a high level of
33	33	19 personal engagement with the strong bonds of sisterhood and
34	34	20 a productive network of community partners;
35	35	21 Whereas, On March 7, 2023, Indiana members of Alpha
36	36	22 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., participated in "AKA Day at the
37	37	23 Capitol" at the Indiana Statehouse;
38	38	24 Whereas, The annual event is an opportunity for members to
39	39	25 speak with local lawmakers, engage in workshops, and

41	41	1 advocate for critical issues such as Black maternal health,
42	42	2 suicide prevention, and other important issues affecting the
43	43	3 Black community;
44	44	4 Whereas, Indiana is home to 20 Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters,
45	45	5 eight of which are located on college and university campuses,
46	46	6 and has 12 active alumnae groups in communities throughout
47	47	7 the state;
48	48	8 Whereas, The central region of the United States is home to
49	49	9 95 empowered and engaged chapters serving Illinois, Indiana,
50	50	10 Kentucky, Minnesota, southeastern Missouri, and Wisconsin;
51	51	11 and
52	52	12 Whereas, There are two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
53	53	13 currently serving in the Indiana Legislature: Therefore,
54	54	14 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
55	55	15 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
56	56	16 the Senate concurring:
57	57	17 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
58	58	18 March 7, 2023, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Day at the
59	59	19 Capitol in the state of Indiana.
60	60	20 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
61	61	21 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
62	62	22 Representative Vanessa Summers for distribution.
