7	7	1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION designating Hypertrophic
8	8	2 Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day and efforts to educate people
9	9	3 about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
10	10	4 Whereas, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a chronic
11	11	5 cardiovascular disease involving thickening of the heart muscle
12	12	6 that can potentially lead to debilitating symptoms and serious
13	13	7 complications, including heart failure, atrial fibrillation,
14	14	8 stroke, and in rare cases, sudden cardiac death;
15	15	9 Whereas, HCM is the most common inheritable heart disease
16	16	10 and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity,
17	17	11 with a reported prevalence ranging from 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 in
18	18	12 the general population;
19	19	13 Whereas, An estimated 700,000 to 1,650,000 people in the
20	20	14 United States have HCM, yet 85% of them may remain

23	23	1 undiagnosed;
24	24	2 Whereas, HCM shares symptoms with other common
25	25	3 cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, such as shortness of
26	26	4 breath, chest pain, fatigue, palpitations, and fainting, making
27	27	5 it difficult to distinguish HCM from these other diseases;
28	28	6 Whereas, All-cause mortality risk is three to four times
29	29	7 higher in patients with HCM than that of the general
30	30	8 population;
31	31	9 Whereas, Knowing one's medical history and any signs and
32	32	10 symptoms of HCM is an important first step in receiving an
33	33	11 accurate diagnosis of HCM;
34	34	12 Whereas, A physician must conduct a thorough screening
35	35	13 with cardiac health questions to help identify a risk of cardiac
36	36	14 disorders both genetic and congenital;
37	37	15 Whereas, A physician may conduct several tests, including
38	38	16 an echocardiogram, a cardiac MRI, or genetic testing to
39	39	17 confirm a family history of HCM, and must examine the heart
40	40	18 to diagnose HCM;
41	41	19 Whereas, Following a diagnosis of HCM, it is important for
42	42	20 patients to work with their physician to learn more about their
43	43	21 disease and understand different management options,
44	44	22 including prescription medicines and surgical treatment
45	45	23 options that may help; and
46	46	24 Whereas, The fourth Wednesday in February is an
47	47	25 appropriate day to observe Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
48	48	26 Awareness Day: Therefore,
49	49	27 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
50	50	28 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
51	51	29 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
52	52	30 designates the fourth Wednesday in February of each year as
53	53	31 "Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day" in the state of
54	54	32 Indiana in order to raise public awareness about hypertrophic
55	55	33 cardiomyopathy as a serious public health issue.

58	58	1 SECTION 2. That the Indiana House of Representatives
59	59	2 acknowledges the critical importance of hypertrophic
60	60	3 cardiomyopathy awareness to improve cardiovascular health in
61	61	4 the state of Indiana.
62	62	5 SECTION 3. That the Indiana House of Representatives
63	63	6 supports raising awareness of the consequences of undiagnosed
64	64	7 and untreated hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the need to
65	65	8 seek appropriate care for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
66	66	9 SECTION 4. That the Indiana House of Representatives
67	67	10 respectfully requests the Governor to issue annually a
68	68	11 proclamation recognizing the fourth Wednesday in February in
69	69	12 Indiana as "Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day" and
70	70	13 calls upon the people in the state of Indiana to observe the day
71	71	14 with appropriate programs and activities.
