1515 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the lifetime
1616 2 achievements of Indianapolis journalist Barbara Boyd.
1717 3 Whereas, Born on April 27, 1929, Barbara Boyd has lived
1818 4 an inspirational life as a trailblazing journalist and continues
1919 5 to lead active efforts to promote opportunities for Indiana's
2020 6 students of color;
2121 7 Whereas, In 1969, Barbara Boyd joined WFBM, now
2222 8 known as WRTV, in Indianapolis and became the first
2323 9 African-American female to report and anchor television news
2424 10 in the state of Indiana;
2525 11 Whereas, Barbara Boyd remained at WRTV until 1994,
2626 12 serving as the station's consumer reporter and anchor for 25
2727 13 years, becoming the definitive consumer reporter in the Circle
2828 14 City and a household name throughout the state;
2929 15 Whereas, In 1973, Barbara Boyd, addressing a television
3030 16 audience from a hospital bed following her mastectomy
3131 17 operation, captured the nation's attention with a
3232 18 groundbreaking report highlighting her struggle with breast
3333 19 cancer and raising awareness that educated and motivated
3434 20 women to seek preventative medical care;
3535 21 Whereas, Barbara Boyd's significant contributions extend
3636 22 beyond her career in journalism with her involvement in many
3737 23 community and civic organizations, such as the March of
3838 24 Dimes, a group that focuses on addressing maternal and infant

4040 1 healthcare, the NAACP, and the Indiana Make-A-Wish
4141 2 Foundation;
4242 3 Whereas, For 50 years, Barbara Boyd has served as a
4343 4 volunteer and advocate for Indianapolis' United Negro College
4444 5 Fund (UNCF), helping Indiana understand the adversities
4545 6 faced by deserving students of color, creating opportunities for
4646 7 these young Hoosiers, and communicating the needs of
4747 8 historically Black colleges;
4848 9 Whereas, Turning 94 this year, Barbara Boyd remains
4949 10 active in promoting UNCF's mission of equity in education
5050 11 throughout Indiana and across the country, lending her tireless
5151 12 efforts and voice to ensure that Hoosiers of color can realize
5252 13 their dream of going to college and become future leaders in
5353 14 Indiana;
5454 15 Whereas, For her notable achievements and advocacy,
5555 16 Barbara Boyd has been recognized with four CASPER
5656 17 broadcasting awards from the Community Service Council of
5757 18 Indianapolis, was named "Woman of the Year" by the American
5858 19 Cancer Society, received awards from the Indianapolis Press
5959 20 Club, The Indiana State Medical Association, and the Cystic
6060 21 Fibrosis Research Foundation, was named one of Indianapolis'
6161 22 Top Ten Women by the Indianapolis Star for three consecutive
6262 23 years, was the recipient of the Martin Luther King Freedom
6363 24 Award, and was inducted into the Indianapolis Hall of Fame;

6565 26 Whereas, Barbara Boyd revolutionized the field of
6666 27 journalism for women and people of color, committed her life
6767 28 to community service, and brought essential awareness to
6868 29 critical issues, creating a legacy that will forever serve as an
6969 30 inspiration to young Hoosiers striving to break barriers and
7070 31 lead lives in the service of others: Therefore,
7171 32 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
7272 33 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives

7575 1 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the
7676 2 lifetime achievements of Barbara Boyd and her dedicated
7777 3 commitment to serving Hoosiers.
7878 4 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
7979 5 to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Barbara Boyd.
