1360 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
14-SECTION 1. IC 10-19-13.5 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
15-AS A NEW CHAPTER TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE
16-JULY 1, 2024]:
17-Chapter 13.5. Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor
18-Sec. 1. As used in this chapter, "Indiana first responder" means
19-an Indiana first responder designated under IC 10-10.5-2-1.
20-Sec. 2. As used in this chapter, "medal" refers to the Hoosier
21-first responder medal of honor described in section 3 of this
22-chapter.
23-Sec. 3. (a) The department may determine an Indiana first

77+17 (b) The department shall procure the medals to be awarded by

80+2 Sec. 4. (a) An entity employing an Indiana first responder or for
81+3 which the Indiana first responder volunteers may nominate an
82+4 Indiana first responder who has been killed or seriously injured in
83+5 the line of duty by submitting an application to the department, in
84+6 a manner prescribed by the department.
85+7 (b) Upon receipt of the nomination, the department may
86+8 approve the nomination in a manner prescribed by the
87+9 department.
88+10 (c) Upon approval of a nomination by the department, the
89+11 department shall notify the entity employing the Indiana first
90+12 responder or for which the Indiana first responder volunteers of
91+13 the nomination. The entity shall notify a member of the general
92+14 assembly who represents the district in which the entity is located
93+15 of the Indiana first responder's nomination. The member of the
94+16 general assembly shall recommend the Indiana first responder for
95+17 the medal to the governor.
96+18 Sec. 5. The governor may award the medal to the Indiana first
97+19 responder or the Indiana first responder's next of kin at a public
98+20 ceremony at a time and place prescribed by the governor.
99+21 Sec. 6. If the department determines that an Indiana first
100+22 responder nominated to the department under section 4 of this
