2626 A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
2727 education.
2828 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
2929 1 SECTION 1. IC 20-30-6.1-4 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
3030 2 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
3131 3 1, 2024]: Sec. 4. (a) The department shall develop grade level
3232 4 appropriate curricula concerning Internet and social media
3333 5 literacy for grades 6 through 12.
3434 6 (b) The curricula developed under subsection (a) must include
3535 7 the following topics:
3636 8 (1) Cyberbullying (as defined in IC 20-19-3-11.5(a))
3737 9 prevention and response.
3838 10 (2) Digital ethics and etiquette, including identification of hate
3939 11 speech, racism, and discrimination.
4040 12 (3) Understanding the means by which to identify, access,
4141 13 analyze, and evaluate the credibility of digital information.
4242 14 (4) Safety and security awareness, including Internet
4343 15 addiction, digital footprint, online predator practices, and
4444 16 identification of fake profiles and fraudulent Internet
4545 17 schemes.

4747 1 (c) A school corporation may include in the school corporation's
4848 2 middle school or high school curriculum an elective course
4949 3 concerning Internet and social media literacy developed under this
5050 4 section.
5151 5 (d) An elective course described in subsection (c) may satisfy one
5252 6 (1) health and wellness credit for the general, Core 40, Core 40
5353 7 with academic honors, and Core 40 with technical honors
5454 8 designation.
5555 9 (e) The department may determine and provide incentives to a
5656 10 school corporation that includes an elective course as described in
5757 11 subsection (c).
