*HC1038* Introduced Version HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ DIGEST OF INTRODUCED RESOL UTION A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Monroe Gray, Jr. Pryor, Harris, Jackson, Pack, Bartlett, Hatcher, Porter, Shackleford, Smith V, Summers _______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on 20242301 2024 HC 1038/DI 140 Introduced Second Regular Session of the 123rd General Assembly (2024) HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Monroe 2 Gray, Jr. 3 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., has the distinguished record of 4 being the longest serving city-county councillor for the City of 5 Indianapolis; 6 Whereas, He was first elected as the councillor for District 8 7 in 1992 and served for 32 years and across five different 8 mayoral administrations; 9 Whereas, Along with being a councillor, he served in the U.S. 10 Army from 1965 to 1967 and was a member of the Indianapolis 11 Fire Department (IFD) for 35 years after first being hired in 12 October of 1972; 13 Whereas, During his IFD career, he first worked as an 14 engineer, was promoted to lieutenant, then captain, and ended 15 his career as division chief working at the IFD headquarters, 16 retiring in 2007; 17 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., helped create the Indianapolis 18 Black Firefighters' Association (IBFA), which seeks to develop 19 IFD career opportunities representing inclusiveness, equality, 20 and diversity within the department, and he was elected as its 21 first president, serving for several years; 22 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., was a deeply involved member 23 of the community, serving as a member or on the boards of 24 many organizations such as the Marion County Democratic 25 Club, Washington Township Democratic Club, Pike Township 2024 HC 1038/DI 140 2 1 Democratic Club, United Northwest Development Association, 2 Flanner House, Planners Neighborhood Organization, 3 Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis, Local 416 International 4 Firefighters, and Tillman H. Harpole American Legion Post 5 No. 249; 6 Whereas, He was a member of organizations such as 100 7 Black Men of Indianapolis, Marion County Black Elected 8 Officials, and the Glenn Howard Junior Golf Program; 9 Whereas, He is an avid golfer and maintains the skill to play 10 competively; 11 Whereas, He is married to his wife, Teresa Cross Gray, with 12 whom he has two children, Kevin and Courtney, and three 13 grandchildren, Jordan, Julian, and Victoria; 14 Whereas, In 2019, Fire Station No. 31 was renamed the 15 "Monroe Gray, Jr. IBFA Headquarters" in his honor; and 16 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., has been a strong advocate for 17 his community and an outspoken leader to ensure equality and 18 justice: Therefore, 19 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 20 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 21 the Senate concurring: 22 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes 23 Monroe Gray, Jr., for serving his community of District 8 on 24 the Indianapolis City-County Council for 32 years. 25 SECTION 2.
