17	17	1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Monroe

19	19	3 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., has the distinguished record of
20	20	4 being the longest serving city-county councillor for the City of
21	21	5 Indianapolis;
22	22	6 Whereas, He was first elected as the councillor for District 8
23	23	7 in 1992 and served for 32 years and across five different
24	24	8 mayoral administrations;
25	25	9 Whereas, Along with being a councillor, he served in the U.S.
26	26	10 Army from 1965 to 1967 and was a member of the Indianapolis
27	27	11 Fire Department (IFD) for 35 years after first being hired in
28	28	12 October of 1972;
29	29	13 Whereas, During his IFD career, he first worked as an
30	30	14 engineer, was promoted to lieutenant, then captain, and ended
31	31	15 his career as division chief working at the IFD headquarters,
32	32	16 retiring in 2007;
33	33	17 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., helped create the Indianapolis
34	34	18 Black Firefighters' Association (IBFA), which seeks to develop
35	35	19 IFD career opportunities representing inclusiveness, equality,
36	36	20 and diversity within the department, and he was elected as its
37	37	21 first president, serving for several years;
38	38	22 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., was a deeply involved member
39	39	23 of the community, serving as a member or on the boards of
40	40	24 many organizations such as the Marion County Democratic
41	41	25 Club, Washington Township Democratic Club, Pike Township

43	43	1 Democratic Club, United Northwest Development Association,
44	44	2 Flanner House, Planners Neighborhood Organization,
45	45	3 Concerned Clergy of Indianapolis, Local 416 International
46	46	4 Firefighters, and Tillman H. Harpole American Legion Post
47	47	5 No. 249;
48	48	6 Whereas, He was a member of organizations such as 100
49	49	7 Black Men of Indianapolis, Marion County Black Elected
50	50	8 Officials, and the Glenn Howard Junior Golf Program;
51	51	9 Whereas, He is an avid golfer and maintains the skill to play
52	52	10 competively;
53	53	11 Whereas, He is married to his wife, Teresa Cross Gray, with
54	54	12 whom he has two children, Kevin and Courtney, and three
55	55	13 grandchildren, Jordan, Julian, and Victoria;
56	56	14 Whereas, In 2019, Fire Station No. 31 was renamed the
57	57	15 "Monroe Gray, Jr. IBFA Headquarters" in his honor; and
58	58	16 Whereas, Monroe Gray, Jr., has been a strong advocate for
59	59	17 his community and an outspoken leader to ensure equality and
60	60	18 justice: Therefore,
61	61	19 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
62	62	20 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
63	63	21 the Senate concurring:
64	64	22 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
65	65	23 Monroe Gray, Jr., for serving his community of District 8 on
66	66	24 the Indianapolis City-County Council for 32 years.
67	67	25 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
68	68	26 Representatives shall transmit a copy of this resolution to State
69	69	27 Representative Cherrish Pryor for distribution.
