SC 8—RC 1504/DI SM January 31, 2024 Second Regular Session 123rd General Assembly (2024) SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. 8 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana 2 Department of Transportation to rename a section of US 41 3 between West 93rd Avenue and West 109th Avenue in Saint 4 John, Indiana, "Schilling Way". 5 Whereas, In the 1920s, twin brothers Frank J. and Louis W. 6 Schilling learned the construction and land development 7 business under the careful instruction of their father, Louis B. 8 Schilling, in Chicago Heights, Illinois; 9 Whereas, In the 1930s, the Schilling brothers settled in St. 10 John, Indiana, where they built family homes and opened a 11 Mobil gas station along a gravel US 41; 12 Whereas, In 1945, the Schilling brothers opened Schilling 13 Lumber and began a legacy of developing various properties 14 across St. John, including housing communities, restaurants, 15 gas stations, the Schilling Inn, the St. John Mall, and even the 16 first local bank; 17 Whereas, In 1965, Frank Schilling began working as a full 18 time employee at Schilling Lumber (now Schillings Home 19 Improvement Center), leading the second generation in 20 growing the family business by expanding the products offered 21 at the store to encompass nearly every product needed for home 22 remodeling, improvement, and construction; 23 Whereas, After 45 years in the family business, Frank was 24 instrumental in opening a full service lumber yard and 25 showroom in Mokena, Illinois, in 2010, allowing the family to SC 8—RC 1504/DI SM 2 1 enter into a new state and market; 2 Whereas, Outside of his work as President of Schillings 3 Home Improvement Center, Frank is a devout Catholic and 4 parishioner, his patronage having included purchasing and 5 donating local hilltop farmland to the St. John the Evangelist 6 Church, which has resided at this location since 2008; 7 Whereas, Directly across from the Church, Frank owns and 8 maintains a 15-foot tall Marian shrine, originally constructed 9 by his grandfather in 1954, and was inspired to improve the 10 shrine by building a path from it to the hilltop; 11 Whereas, Frank's alterations to the shrine have grown into 12 a decades-long multimillion dollar family investment to create 13 the Shrine of Christ's Passion, a twisting half-mile trail 14 connecting 18 meditation grottos, 40 life-sized bronze statues, 15 over 1,000 trees, the Sanctity of Life Memorial, a religious gift 16 shop, and accompanying audio that greets more than 200,000 17 pilgrims per year from 40 countries as one of the most popular 18 Catholic shrines in the Midwest; 19 Whereas, For his decades of work in business and in 20 support of his local community, Frank was named to the Times 21 Media Company's Times Business & Industry Hall of Fame in 22 2016 and given a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Eric 23 Holcomb in 2021; and 24 Whereas, It is fitting for the Indiana Department of 25 Transportation to rename a section of US 41 between West 26 93rd Avenue and West 109th Avenue in Saint John, Indiana, 27 "Schilling Way": Therefore, 28 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly 29 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives 30 concurring: 31 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the 32 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename a section of 33 US 41 between West 93rd Avenue and West 109th Avenue in SC 8—RC 1504/DI SM 3 1 Saint John, Indiana, "Schilling Way". 2 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed 3 to transmit copies of this Resolution to Frank Schilling and the 4 Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
