1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Martha
2 Jane Lasater.
3 Whereas, Martha Jane Lasater was born January 2, 1940,
4 in Muncie, Indiana, to Gerald and Louise Wingate and
5 graduated from Desoto High School in 1958;
6 Whereas, After graduation, Jane embarked on a career in
7 public service in Delaware County spanning more than forty
8 years, starting as a Township Trustee, followed by six years of
9 service as County Treasurer, eight years as County Auditor,
10 eight years as County Recorder, and nine years as a County
11 Councilwoman;
12 Whereas, Jane was also an exemplar of Indiana's
13 agricultural heritage, living her life on the family farm, which
14 received the Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award in 2009 to
15 commemorate 100 years of family ownership;
16 Whereas, Jane lived out her rural values through support
17 of youth and 4-H programs, years of volunteer work at the
18 Delaware County Fair, and her longtime service as a voting
19 member of the Delaware County Fair Board;
20 Whereas, During her life, Jane's commitment to public
21 service was recognized by all those around her, from Governor
22 Robert Orr naming her a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest
23 honor bestowed on a citizen, in 1988, to the Delaware County
24 Board of Commissioners dedicating the Delaware County
25 Fairgrounds grandstand as the Jane Lasater Memorial

1 Grandstand in 2023;
2 Whereas, Jane prided herself on improving government for
3 the benefit of the people, as evidenced by her motto "People
4 Before Politics"; and
5 Whereas, Jane leaves behind a legacy of public service
6 deserving of the highest honor and praise: Therefore,
7 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
8 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
9 concurring:
10 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
11 memorializes the life and legacy of Martha Jane Lasater.
12 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
13 to transmit copies of this Resolution to the family of Martha
14 Jane Lasater.
