1313 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing George
1414 2 "Big Mac" McGinnis.
1515 3 Whereas, George "Big Mac" McGinnis was born in
1616 4 Harpersville, Alabama, on August 12, 1950, to Willie and
1717 5 Burnie McGinnis;
1818 6 Whereas, McGinnis was a graduate of George Washington
1919 7 High School where he led his team to a 31-0 record and an
2020 8 Indiana state basketball championship in 1969;
2121 9 Whereas, He set an Indiana State Tournament scoring
2222 10 record by scoring 148 points in his final four games and was
2323 11 named Mr. Basketball for the state of Indiana in 1969;
2424 12 Whereas, McGinnis went on to play basketball for Indiana
2525 13 University, where he was the first sophomore to lead the Big
2626 14 Ten in scoring and rebounding;
2727 15 Whereas, Deciding to better his family's financial situation,
2828 16 he went to the Indiana Pacers of the American Basketball
2929 17 Association (ABA), where he used his signing bonus to buy his
3030 18 mother a house;
3131 19 Whereas, In his first two seasons, he led the Pacers to back-
3232 20 to-back ABA championships and was named American
3333 21 Basketball Association Playoffs MVP;
3434 22 Whereas, In his NBA debut season with the Philadelphia

3636 1 76ers, he made the All-NBA First Team and was selected for
3737 2 two All-Star games out of his three seasons;
3838 3 Whereas, McGinnis later played for the Denver Nuggets,
3939 4 scoring a career-high 43 points in the 1978 season, before he
4040 5 returned to the Indiana Pacers for his final two seasons in
4141 6 1981;
4242 7 Whereas, He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball
4343 8 Hall of Fame in 2017 and is one of only four players whose
4444 9 jersey (No. 30) is retired by the Indiana Pacers.
4545 10 Whereas, McGinnis married Lynda Dotson, his high school
4646 11 sweetheart, in 1976 and they were together until her passing in
4747 12 2019;
4848 13 Whereas, McGinnis passed away on December 14, 2023, in
4949 14 Indianapolis and is survived by his sister Bonnie; and
5050 15 Whereas, George McGinnis was a stellar athlete who left
5151 16 an incredible legacy for Hoosiers and left a profound mark on
5252 17 the game of basketball in the state of Indiana: Therefore,
5353 18 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
5454 19 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
5555 20 concurring:
5656 21 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
5757 22 memorializes the life and accomplishments of George
5858 23 McGinnis.
5959 24 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby direct to
6060 25 transmit copies of this Resolution to the family of George
6161 26 McGinnis.
