SENATE RESOLUTION ____
MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1 A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring the 50th anniversary
2 of disability rights legislation culminating in the Americans
3 with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA).
4 Whereas, The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
5 (ADA) is a law protecting the civil rights of people with
6 disabilities;
7 Whereas, It prohibits discrimination against people with
8 disabilities in areas such as employment, transportation, public
9 accommodation, access to services, and more;
10 Whereas, The inception of the ADA began long before the
11 first draft of the bill was submitted, and truly began with
12 Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, which banned
13 discrimination on the basis of disability for recipients of federal
14 funds;
15 Whereas, This change in policy, along with the civil rights
16 advocacy for protections for people with disabilities, was a
17 precursor to the first draft of the ADA in 1988 under the
18 Reagan Administration;
2024	DR 3834/DI LF 2
1 Whereas, The ADA was reintroduced in the 101st Congress
2 and passed through the Senate and House, and was signed into
3 law by President Bush in 1990;
4 Whereas, The ADA today protects more than 61 million
5 Americans with disabilities and ensures their ability to enjoy
6 the same rights as any other American; and
7 Whereas, The Indiana Senate has a duty to continue its
8 work in protecting Indiana's over 1 million people with
9 disabilities and protecting their civil rights: Therefore,
10	Be it resolved by the Senate of the
11 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
12 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes the
13 importance of the ADA and continues to protect the civil rights
14 of Hoosiers with disabilities.
