1515 MADAM PRESIDENT:
1616 I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1717 1 A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring Phi Beta Sigma
1818 2 Fraternity, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
1919 3 Incorporated for their years of service and leadership in their
2020 4 communities.
2121 5 Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded on
2222 6 January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C.,
2323 7 by three young African American students;
2424 8 Whereas, The establishment of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,
2525 9 Incorporated is credited to the most honorable A. Langston
2626 10 Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown;
2727 11 Whereas, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded
2828 12 on January 16, 1920, at Howard University in Washington,
2929 13 D.C., by five illustrious African American women by the names
3030 14 of Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler
3131 15 Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts with the
3232 16 assistance of the most honorable A. Langston Taylor of Phi
3333 17 Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.;
3434 18 Whereas, The sorority is the sister organization of the
3535 19 fraternity, no other fraternity and sorority known to man are

3737 1 constitutionally bound as Sigma and Zeta are, and they both
3838 2 foster a mutually supportive relationship;
3939 3 Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma's greatest asset and source of
4040 4 strength are its brothers, who are the main tools used to
4141 5 accomplish the goals of the fraternity, such as implementing
4242 6 mechanisms that successfully represent "Culture for Service
4343 7 and Service for Humanity" that encourage service, scholarship,
4444 8 and brotherhood;
4545 9 Whereas, The founders of Zeta Phi Beta were strong,
4646 10 principled coeds who possessed modesty, strength of character,
4747 11 and pride in academic achievement, who believed that the
4848 12 sorority was more than an organization - it was a movement;
4949 13 Whereas, This belief system reflected the desire to provide
5050 14 meaningful Service, exemplify true Scholarship, set a standard
5151 15 for Sisterly Love, and define the noble concept of Finer
5252 16 Womanhood;
5353 17 Whereas, One hundred and ten years later, Phi Beta Sigma
5454 18 has grown into a global leadership organization with many
5555 19 counterparts, including the Phi Beta Sigma Housing
5656 20 Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Educational Foundation, the
5757 21 Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union, the Phi Beta Sigma
5858 22 Charitable Outreach Foundation, and the Sigma Beta youth
5959 23 auxiliary to improve the quality of life of others;
6060 24 Whereas, As they embark on their one hundred and fourth
6161 25 year of service, Zeta Phi Beta's national and local programs
6262 26 have sustained and uplifted people of color through the
6363 27 endowment of its National Educational Foundation, the Zetas
6464 28 Helping Other People Excel community outreach programs,
6565 29 and their engagement of all community members through their
6666 30 youth, adult, and male auxiliary programs;
6767 31 Whereas, Each local Zeta chapter in the state of Indiana
6868 32 has given countless hours of voluntary service alongside their

7070 1 auxiliaries to educate the public, improve the quality of life for
7171 2 youth and families, provide scholarships, support organized
7272 3 charities, and promote social and civic change legislation; and
7373 4 Whereas, It is important to acknowledge and recognize the
7474 5 efforts and unwavering dedication of the brothers of Phi Beta
7575 6 Sigma and sisters of Zeta Phi Beta, where they continue to
7676 7 uplift their communities and provide proactive services to
7777 8 create an equitable world where all people can thrive:
7878 9 Therefore,
7979 10 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
8080 11 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
8181 12 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes Phi Beta
8282 13 Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
8383 14 Incorporated as organizations with members who dedicate
8484 15 themselves to service, bettering their communities, and working
8585 16 towards a better world.
8686 17 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby
8787 18 directed to transmit copies of this resolution to Phi Beta Sigma
8888 19 Fraternity, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
8989 20 Incorporated.
