15	15	MADAM PRESIDENT:
16	16	I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
17	17	1 A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring Phi Beta Sigma
18	18	2 Fraternity, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
19	19	3 Incorporated for their years of service and leadership in their
20	20	4 communities.
21	21	5 Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity was founded on
22	22	6 January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, D.C.,
23	23	7 by three young African American students;
24	24	8 Whereas, The establishment of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,
25	25	9 Incorporated is credited to the most honorable A. Langston
26	26	10 Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles I. Brown;
27	27	11 Whereas, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded
28	28	12 on January 16, 1920, at Howard University in Washington,
29	29	13 D.C., by five illustrious African American women by the names
30	30	14 of Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Pearl Anna Neal, Myrtle Tyler
31	31	15 Faithful, Viola Tyler Goings, and Fannie Pettie Watts with the
32	32	16 assistance of the most honorable A. Langston Taylor of Phi
33	33	17 Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.;
34	34	18 Whereas, The sorority is the sister organization of the
35	35	19 fraternity, no other fraternity and sorority known to man are

37	37	1 constitutionally bound as Sigma and Zeta are, and they both
38	38	2 foster a mutually supportive relationship;
39	39	3 Whereas, Phi Beta Sigma's greatest asset and source of
40	40	4 strength are its brothers, who are the main tools used to
41	41	5 accomplish the goals of the fraternity, such as implementing
42	42	6 mechanisms that successfully represent "Culture for Service
43	43	7 and Service for Humanity" that encourage service, scholarship,
44	44	8 and brotherhood;
45	45	9 Whereas, The founders of Zeta Phi Beta were strong,
46	46	10 principled coeds who possessed modesty, strength of character,
47	47	11 and pride in academic achievement, who believed that the
48	48	12 sorority was more than an organization - it was a movement;
49	49	13 Whereas, This belief system reflected the desire to provide
50	50	14 meaningful Service, exemplify true Scholarship, set a standard
51	51	15 for Sisterly Love, and define the noble concept of Finer
52	52	16 Womanhood;
53	53	17 Whereas, One hundred and ten years later, Phi Beta Sigma
54	54	18 has grown into a global leadership organization with many
55	55	19 counterparts, including the Phi Beta Sigma Housing
56	56	20 Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Educational Foundation, the
57	57	21 Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union, the Phi Beta Sigma
58	58	22 Charitable Outreach Foundation, and the Sigma Beta youth
59	59	23 auxiliary to improve the quality of life of others;
60	60	24 Whereas, As they embark on their one hundred and fourth
61	61	25 year of service, Zeta Phi Beta's national and local programs
62	62	26 have sustained and uplifted people of color through the
63	63	27 endowment of its National Educational Foundation, the Zetas
64	64	28 Helping Other People Excel community outreach programs,
65	65	29 and their engagement of all community members through their
66	66	30 youth, adult, and male auxiliary programs;
67	67	31 Whereas, Each local Zeta chapter in the state of Indiana
68	68	32 has given countless hours of voluntary service alongside their

70	70	1 auxiliaries to educate the public, improve the quality of life for
71	71	2 youth and families, provide scholarships, support organized
72	72	3 charities, and promote social and civic change legislation; and
73	73	4 Whereas, It is important to acknowledge and recognize the
74	74	5 efforts and unwavering dedication of the brothers of Phi Beta
75	75	6 Sigma and sisters of Zeta Phi Beta, where they continue to
76	76	7 uplift their communities and provide proactive services to
77	77	8 create an equitable world where all people can thrive:
78	78	9 Therefore,
79	79	10 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
80	80	11 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
81	81	12 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes Phi Beta
82	82	13 Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
83	83	14 Incorporated as organizations with members who dedicate
84	84	15 themselves to service, bettering their communities, and working
85	85	16 towards a better world.
86	86	17 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby
87	87	18 directed to transmit copies of this resolution to Phi Beta Sigma
88	88	19 Fraternity, Incorporated and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority,
89	89	20 Incorporated.
