SENATE RESOLUTION ____
MADAM PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1 A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing the 100th
2 anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Ireland and the
3 United States and celebrating the 2024 AISLC Summit in
4 Dublin, Ireland.
5 Whereas, Diplomatic relations between Ireland and the
6 United States began in 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge
7 accepted the credentials of Ambassador Timothy Smiddy,
8 making the United States the first nation to establish formal
9 diplomatic relations with Ireland;
10 Whereas, Almost one tenth of Americans identify as being
11 of Irish ancestry;
12 Whereas, Irish immigrants have greatly contributed to the
13 development of the United States from building skyscrapers to
14 forming the transcontinental railroad to contributing to the
15 political structure of America;
16 Whereas, Throughout the 100 years of relations, the ties
17 between Ireland and United States have remained strong, with
18 Ireland being the 9th-largest investor in the United States and
19 over 950 American companies established in Ireland;

1 Whereas, The American Irish State Legislators Caucus is
2 a bipartisan group of current and former Irish American
3 legislators along with their legislative counterparts at the local
4 and national level in Ireland;
5 Whereas, The goal of the caucus is to strengthen the
6 longstanding relationship between the two countries for the
7 mutual benefit of both, provide education and increase
8 understanding for issues of importance for both countries, and
9 celebrate Irish heritage; and
10 Whereas, The summit being held in August will showcase
11 the relationship between the United States and Ireland and
12 celebrate the continuing relationship: Therefore,
13 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
14 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
15 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes the
16 100th anniversary of continued diplomatic relations with
17 Ireland and the work of the AISLC.
18 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby
19 directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the American
20 Irish State Legislators Caucus.
