Synopsis: Background checks of maintenance workers. Requires a
landlord to adopt a policy requiring individuals who apply for certain
employment positions that include access to the rental premises during
the term of a tenant's lease to submit to a national criminal history
background check before the landlord may hire the prospective
employee.
Effective: July 1, 2025.

HOUSE BILL No. 1284
A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
criminal law and procedure.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1 SECTION 1. IC 32-31-8-8.1 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
2 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
3 1, 2025]: Sec. 8.1. (a) As used in this section, "national criminal
4 history background check" has the meaning set forth in
5 IC 25-1-1.1-4.
6 (b) Each landlord shall adopt a policy requiring each individual
7 who applies with the landlord for employment with duties and
8 responsibilities that include access to the rental premises during
9 the term of a tenant's lease to submit to a national criminal history
10 background check before the landlord may hire the prospective
11 employee.
