2727 A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
2828 education.
2929 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
3030 1 SECTION 1. IC 20-26-5-34.4, AS ADDED BY P.L.254-2017,
3131 2 SECTION 5, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE
3232 3 JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 34.4. Each school corporation shall adopt a policy
3333 4 addressing measures intended to increase child suicide awareness and
3434 5 prevention. The policy must address the following:
3535 6 (1) Counseling services for the child and the child's family related
3636 7 to suicide prevention.
3737 8 (2) Availability of referral information for crisis intervention to
3838 9 children, parents, and school corporation staff.
3939 10 (3) Increasing awareness of the relationship between suicide and
4040 11 drug and alcohol use.
4141 12 (4) Training on warning signs and tendencies that may evidence
4242 13 that a child is considering suicide.
4343 14 (5) Availability of information concerning suicide prevention
4444 15 services in the community.
4545 16 (6) Cooperation among the school corporation and suicide
4646 17 prevention services in the community.

4848 1 (7) Development of a plan to assist survivors of attempted suicide
4949 2 and to assist children and school corporation staff in coping with
5050 3 an attempted suicide or death of a student or school employee.
5151 4 (8) Development of a plan to notify a child's parents if the
5252 5 child is a victim of bullying or if the child expresses suicidal
5353 6 thoughts to a school employee, and to provide the child's
5454 7 parents with the following:
5555 8 (A) The suicide awareness and prevention materials and
5656 9 resources compiled under the policy created by this
5757 10 section.
5858 11 (B) The firearms storage best practices and educational
5959 12 materials described in IC 20-19-3-30.4.
6060 13 (C) Any other information or resource that is appropriate.
