2317 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
2418 2 Department of Transportation to rename that portion of U.S.
2519 3 Highway 31 from Smith Valley Road to County Line Road the
2620 4 "State Trooper Aaron Smith Memorial Highway".
2721 5 Whereas, State Trooper Aaron Smith was tragically killed on
2822 6 June 28, 2023, while assisting fellow troopers who were in a
2923 7 pursuit of a stolen vehicle on Ronald Reagan Parkway, north
3024 8 of I-70, in Hendricks County;
3125 9 Whereas, State Trooper Aaron Smith grew up in Johnson
3226 10 County and went on to serve in the United States Army
3327 11 National Guard where he received awards for his service;
3428 12 Whereas, Following his time in the National Guard, State
3529 13 Trooper Smith joined the Indiana State Police where he served
3630 14 for five years, also earning two Lifesaving Awards;
3731 15 Whereas, Trooper Smith seemed to go above and beyond in
3832 16 any duty that called. When tornados hit his hometown in
3933 17 Johnson County, he was there to help the community and pick
4034 18 up debris;
4135 19 Whereas, It takes a special individual to serve in the variety
4236 20 of capacities that Trooper Smith did, both with the United
4337 21 States Army National Guard and the Indiana State Police. This
4438 22 selfless service is commendable and an example of what public
4539 23 service looks like; and
4640 24 Whereas, State Trooper Aaron Smith knew he wanted to serve
4741 25 his community from a young age, and he wanted to be a police

4943 1 officer since the age of six. Trooper Smith was the definition of
5044 2 a truly humble public servant who always put others before
5145 3 himself: Therefore,
5246 4 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5347 5 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
5448 6 the Senate concurring:
5549 7 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the
5650 8 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that portion of
5751 9 U.S. Highway 31 from Smith Valley Road to County Line Road
5852 10 the "State Trooper Aaron Smith Memorial Highway".
5953 11 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
6054 12 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
6155 13 Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
