1515 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the Indiana
1616 2 State University Band program's centennial.
1717 3 Whereas, The Indiana State University Band program has
1818 4 distinguished itself as an ensemble of excellence while
1919 5 representing the Hoosier state throughout the country;
2020 6 Whereas, Indiana State University started its first official
2121 7 band in 1924, but the program took off starting in 1939 under
2222 8 the direction of Joseph A. Gremelspacher, professor of music
2323 9 at the school;
2424 10 Whereas, Gremelspacher developed the band into a national
2525 11 award-winning ensemble, and he authored and arranged the
2626 12 Indiana State fight song, "March On!", which premiered at the
2727 13 homecoming rally on October 20, 1939;
2828 14 Whereas, In 1964, the band performed in Indianapolis during
2929 15 a visit of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and he personally wrote
3030 16 a letter to the then-director of the band program, George
3131 17 Graesch, thanking him for the wonderful performance;
3232 18 Whereas, In 1978, world renowned Kennedy Center honoree
3333 19 Aaron Copland served as composer in residence and guest
3434 20 directed the Indiana State University Wind Ensemble in
3535 21 performing his "Lincoln Portrait", which was narrated by ISU's
3636 22 then-president Richard Landini;
3737 23 Whereas, The band program's annual Contemporary Music
3838 24 Festival, which began in 1966, has featured week-long
3939 25 residencies that have included the Indianapolis Symphony

4141 1 Orchestra, Louisville Symphony Orchestra, and arts critics
4242 2 from newspapers such as the Cincinnati Enquirer;
4343 3 Whereas, Over its 100 year history, Indiana State University
4444 4 Band alumni can be found performing in professional
4545 5 orchestras, sitting on music college faculties, teaching in public
4646 6 and private secondary schools, and playing for self-enrichment
4747 7 in community bands across the country; and
4848 8 Whereas, Indiana State University Band's current leadership
4949 9 includes Director of Bands Dr. Eric Scott, Associate Director
5050 10 of Bands Dr. Emmanuel Rodriguez, School of Music Director
5151 11 Dr. Peggy Moran, College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr.
5252 12 Melinda Roberts, and University President Dr. Mike Godard:
5353 13 Therefore,
5454 14 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5555 15 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
5656 16 the Senate concurring:
5757 17 SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly recognizes the
5858 18 100th anniversary of the Indiana State University Band
5959 19 program.
6060 20 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
6161 21 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
6262 22 Representative Tonya Pfaff for distribution.
