1717 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing May as
1818 2 Lupus Awareness Month.
1919 3 Whereas, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting an
2020 4 estimated 1.5 million Americans with a disproportionately
2121 5 negative impact on women and especially African American,
2222 6 Hispanic/Latina, Asian American, Native American, Alaska
2323 7 Native, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander women;
2424 8 Whereas, Lupus causes the immune system to attack healthy
2525 9 tissue, resulting in widespread systemic inflammation and
2626 10 damage to various organs, including the skin, joints, kidneys,
2727 11 heart, lungs, and brain;
2828 12 Whereas, Symptoms of lupus can be so highly variable,
2929 13 affecting the musculoskeletal, nervous, blood, immune, and
3030 14 reproductive systems, and it can also cause increased risks of
3131 15 cancer, chronic pain, fatigue, hair loss, eye complications, and
3232 16 psychological effects making diagnosis and treatment of the
3333 17 disease difficult;
3434 18 Whereas, The variability of this condition often leads to
3535 19 delays in treatment, increased health care costs, and reduced
3636 20 quality of life for patients;
3737 21 Whereas, Public education campaigns, clinical trials, and
3838 22 affordable health care are needed to improve early diagnosis,
3939 23 reduce treatment time lags, and enhance lupus education
4040 24 among both health care providers and the general public as
4141 25 there is no known cure for lupus;

4343 1 Whereas, May is recognized nationwide as Lupus Awareness
4444 2 Month, a time for educating the public, advocating for
4545 3 additional research funding, and acknowledging the strength of
4646 4 those struggling with this chronic disease;
4747 5 Whereas, President Ronald Reagan first designated a
4848 6 national month of awareness, "to mark our great concern for
4949 7 the thousands of Americans who suffer from lupus," and other
5050 8 leaders have joined the cause; and
5151 9 Whereas, It is important that the state of Indiana join in these
5252 10 efforts to raise awareness, reduce health disparities, and offer
5353 11 support to those individuals and families affected by lupus:
5454 12 Therefore,
5555 13 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5656 14 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
5757 15 the Senate concurring:
5858 16 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
5959 17 May as Lupus Awareness Month to increase awareness about
6060 18 this debilitating autoimmune disease and the impact it has on
6161 19 communities throughout Indiana.
6262 20 SECTION 2. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
6363 21 the need for expanded research funding, public education
6464 22 campaigns, and efforts to make treatments more accessible to
6565 23 those affected by lupus.
6666 24 SECTION 3. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
6767 25 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
6868 26 Representative Earl Harris Jr., the Indiana Community Action
6969 27 Poverty Institute, the Lupus Foundation of America, and to all
7070 28 other appropriate agencies involved with lupus awareness and
7171 29 advocacy for distribution.
