RESOLUTION No. ____
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring those who
2 were part of the B-58 Hustler program.
3 Whereas, In the early 1950s, Convair developed the first
4 supersonic delta wing bomber capable of delivering five
5 nuclear weapons at blazing Mach 2 speed;
6 Whereas, The United States Air Force developed 84 of these
7 bombers at two bases: the 43rd Bomb Wing at Little Rock Air
8 Force Base in Arkansas and the 305th Bomb Wing at Bunker
9 Hill Air Force Base in North Central Indiana, which is now
10 named Grissom Air Force Reserve Base;
11 Whereas, One-third of this force was in constant readiness,
12 capable of launching all aircraft in a matter of minutes to strike
13 overseas targets, ensuring mutually assured destruction and
14 thereby deterring adversaries from striking the United States;
15 Whereas, The bombers were the vanguard of the U.S. military
16 response to aggression, serving as a vital weapon and key asset
17 of the Strategic Air Command and embodying the U.S. strategy
18 of deterrence through overwhelming strength;
19 Whereas, The Strategic Air Command motto was, "Peace is
20 our Profession";
21 Whereas, The B-58 Hustler set more records than any fighter
22 or bomber aircraft worldwide with five aeronautical trophies,
23 including the Thompson, Bleriot, Mackay, Bendix, and Harmon
24 awards;

1 Whereas, Many of the records set by this remarkable aircraft
2 stand today, and the "Can Do Mach 2" B-58 Hustler holds the
3 record for 14 world speed records in international competition;
4 and
5 Whereas, The American people owe a debt of gratitude to
6 those who were part of the B-58 Hustler program and
7 remembrance for those who died in service of protecting the
8 nation: Therefore,
9 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
10 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
11 the Senate concurring:
12 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors
13 those who were part of the B-58 Hustler program.
14 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
15 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to State
16 Representative Mike Karickhoff for distribution.
