estimates, and the recent Indiana census suggests, there are
approximately 1.6 million individuals who have experienced a
brain injury from trauma or stroke in the state and that nearly
300,000 Hoosiers are disabled as a result of those events;
Whereas, The Indiana Department of Health reported 1,441
traumatic brain injury-related deaths and another 4,251
non-fatal traumatic brain injury hospitalizations in 2022;
Whereas, Many brain injuries go unreported and untreated
because of lack of education, awareness, and recognition of the
effects of brain injuries on survivors and their families;
Whereas, Brain injury survivors and their families can
struggle to identify and secure proper medical treatment,
services, and care, despite the often lifelong effects of brain
injuries; and
Whereas, The Brain Injury Association of Indiana works to
reduce the incidence and impact of brain injuries through
education, advocacy, support, and prevention, and it fosters
collaboration among agencies to increase public understanding
of brain injuries: Therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
recognizes March 2025 as Brain Injury Awareness Month to
support brain injury survivors and their families, increase the
public's awareness of the prevalence of brain injuries in the
state, and recognize the importance of prevention and treatment
of brain injuries.
